Malala Yousafzai, shot for defying Taliban, to write book

LONDON (AP) ? Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager shot in the head by the Taliban as she returned home from school, is writing a book about the traumatic event and her long-running campaign to promote children's education.

Publisher Weidenfeld and Nicolson announced that it would release "I am Malala" in Britain and Commonwealth countries this fall. Little, Brown and Co. will publish the 15-year-old's memoir in the United States and much of the rest of the world.

"Malala is already an inspiration to millions around the world. Reading her story of courage and survival will open minds, enlarge hearts, and eventually allow more girls and boys to receive the education they hunger for," said Michael Pietsch, executive vice president and publisher of Little, Brown.

A Taliban gunman shot Malala on Oct. 9 in northwestern Pakistan. The militant group said it targeted her because she promoted "Western thinking" and, through a blog, had been an outspoken critic of the Taliban's opposition to educating girls.

The shooting sparked outrage in Pakistan and many other countries, and her story drew global attention to the struggle for women's rights in Malala's homeland. The teen even made the shortlist for Time magazine's "Person of the Year" in 2012.

Malala was brought to the U.K. for treatment and spent several months in a hospital undergoing skull reconstruction and cochlear implant surgeries. She was released last month and has started attending school in Britain.

Malala said in a statement Wednesday that she hoped telling her story would be "part of the campaign to give every boy and girl the right to go to school.

"I hope the book will reach people around the world, so they realize how difficult it is for some children to get access to education," she said. "I want to tell my story, but it will also be the story of 61 million children who can't get education."

Publishers did not reveal the price tag for the book deal, estimated by the Guardian newspaper at 2 million pounds ($3 million).

Ten years and 10,000 fewer premature deaths later

By Jonathan Allen

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg marked the tenth anniversary on Wednesday of his ban on smoking in bars and restaurants with a report saying the ban and subsequent anti-smoking measures had prevented 10,000 premature deaths.

"Ten years ago when New York City prohibited smoking in restaurants and bars, many predicted the end of the hospitality, restaurant and tourism industries," Bloomberg said in a statement.

"Yet ten years later, fewer New Yorkers are smoking, we are living longer, our industries are thriving and nobody longs for a return to smoke-filled bars and restaurants."

Critics of the move feared banning smoking would hurt the restaurant and bar business, but the Health Department report said there are now some 6,000 more restaurants and bars in the city than there were a decade ago.

The city's Smoke-Free Air Act came into effect a little over a year into Bloomberg's first term as mayor in 2003 and prohibited smoking inside bars, restaurants and most workplaces.

The following year, the city began providing free nicotine replacement therapy to smokers trying to quit and in 2011 expanded the smoking ban to the city's parks and beaches.

According to the report released on Wednesday, the proportion of adult smokers dropped by about a third to 15 percent in 2011 from 21.5 percent in 2002. The report, released by the city's Health Department, also said the proportion of youths under age 18 who smoke dropped by about half to 8.5 percent.

Bloomberg's tenure, which will end this year, has been marked by his efforts to improve New Yorkers' health by trying to induce them to eat less salt, trans fats and calories in general, among other measures.

Bloomberg has been criticized by some as paternalistic but his efforts have coincided with an increase in New Yorkers' life expectancy, including a decline in tobacco-related deaths.

Bloomberg's attempt to limit the size of sugary drinks sold in the city was derailed this month only hours before the new rules were to take effect when a judge ruled that they were "arbitrary and capricious". The city is appealing that decision.

A week later, Bloomberg announced his plan to require shops to hide cigarettes and tobacco products from public view, arguing that would shield young people from marketing efforts.

Some shop owners and cigarette manufacturers have criticized the plan as unnecessary extra regulation that would infringe the free speech provision of the U.S. Constitution.

Bloomberg also proposed a minimum price of $10.50 for a pack of cigarettes, in the hope that some smokers would find the habit too expensive to maintain. The two bills are now before the city council.

Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of premature death in the city, according to the Health Department.

Ronald Bayer, a professor of public health at Columbia University, called Bloomberg's health initiatives a "major achievement" and said his efforts to make smoking less socially acceptable were an effective and legitimate use of his office.

He said it remains an open question how much further government could go to discourage smokers to quit.

Hollande's popularity at new low as he grapples with French economy: poll

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande's popularity rating has fallen to its lowest level since he came to power, a poll found on Wednesday, a day before he is due to address the nation to ask for patience as he attempts to revive the economy.

Ten months into his tenure, the Socialist president is struggling to reverse rising jobless claims, which are at their highest level in 15 years, and to stimulate an economy teetering near recession.

Only 27 percent of those polled in the LH2 poll for left-leaning weekly Le Nouvel Observateur expressed satisfaction with Hollande, with 68 percent dissatisfied.

Hollande was elected last May on pledges to get people back to work. His inability to meet that goal and a steady stream of weak economic data has eroded his popularity, which fell to about 30 percent late last month, according to various polls.

In the LH2 survey, just 15 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with his efforts to fight unemployment, with 81 percent dissatisfied. His efforts to reduce the public debt fared only slightly better, garnering a 22 percent satisfaction rate.

"This assessment ... shows that his May 2012 designation as a 'candidate of change' now leaves people with a feeling they have been deceived, which is amplified for his measures to fight unemployment and reduce the public debt," said pollster LH2.

Only in Hollande's management of foreign relations did those polled express more satisfaction than dissatisfaction - 47 percent against 45 percent.

Hollande is due to give a prime-time television interview on Thursday aimed at reassuring a skeptical public over the economic outlook.

The survey questioned 968 people by telephone on March 22 and 23.

Chris Brown opens up about Rihanna assault

By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Chris Brown wants to say goodbye to the past. Stopping by "On Air With Ryan Seacrest," ?the "Look At Me Now" crooner talked candidly about the current status of his relationship with Rihanna, whether they've been able to move on after he assaulted her four years ago, and his own view of his bad behavior.

When asked by Ryan Seacrest whether he ever thought Ri-Ri would forgive him the way that she did, the 23-year-old Brown admitted he "didn't know," but he's been making amends for the incident ever since.

"I just tried my best to be the best man I could be over the years and just show her how remorseful and sorry I was for the incident and that time was probably the worst part of my life and being that she has and she's a wonderful person I'm eternally grateful and thankful," the entertainer told the American Idol host on his radio show.?

Jennifer Lopez and Chris Brown get together in the studio

As for how they're getting on now, Breezy added: "It's still like we're kids. I try not to be too grown and be like, 'Lets have candlelight dinner every night.' I try to make sure everything is fun. It has to be fun and it has to be genuine."

The singer also acknowledged the challenge he continues to face in winning fans back that abandoned him after his domestic violence rap.

"People are entitled to their opinions. I can't go around blaming. It's all about my responsibility and me growing up as a man," he said. "So I think now that I'm becoming older, and trying to mature in this life under the public eye at all times, I have to focus on doing the right thing and being more of a humble individual."

When Ryan wondered what lesson he learned from that tough time, Brown replied, "that you can lose it all."

"And I'm not just saying fame or stardom because that's not what it's about. I'm talking about dignity (and) integrity. You know, you lose yourself in a way."

While he admitted he learned -- and is still learning -- from his mistakes, the R&B star was quick not to blame the beatdown on his relative youth (he was still a teenager at the time it happened).

"I think for me that at age 18, 19, I was capable of writing and producing songs, so I'm also capable of making the right choices," noted Brown. "Being at that young age, I can tell you I was arrogant and definitely hotheaded. Everybody has a temper, but for me it was not knowing how to control it when I thought I had the world in my hands."

Chris Brown's valet fight: Insider the dispute over $10 parking fee

The "F.A.M.E." artist also elaborated on the altercation he got into with a valet the other day over a $10 parking fee, saying that he had given the valet a $100 and the man came back and demanded more money.

Chris said next time: "I've got to just shut up and be like, 'Security go get the keys!' I'll be by the car."

On the business side of things, Brown -- who appeared on the show to promote his new single, "Fine China," which drops in April -- also revealed he's currently working on a collaboration with Jennifer Lopez, whom he hopes to feature on his new album.

US MARCH JOBS REPORT/THREE OF G4 CENTRAL BANKS THURS/NEW QUARTER BEGINS/FINAL MARCH PMIS/KENYA SUPREME COURT RULING/SPAIN-FRANCE BOND AUCTIONS

Given the sound and fury of the past fortnight, it?s hard not to conclude that the messiness of the eventual Cyprus bailout is another inflection point in the whole euro crisis. For most observers, including Mr Dijsselbloem it seems, it ups the ante again on several fronts ? 1) possible bank contagion via nervy senior creditors and depositors fearful of bail-ins at the region?s weakest institutions; 2) an unwelcome rise in the cost of borrowing for European banks who remain far more levered than US peers and are already grinding down balance sheets to the detriment of the hobbled European economy; and 3) likely heavy economic and social pressures in Cyprus going forward that, like Greece, increase euro exit risk to some degree. Add reasonable concerns about the credibility and coherence of euro policymaking during this latest episode and a side-order of German/Dutch ?orthodoxy? in sharp relief and it all looks a bit rum again.

Yet the reaction of world markets has been relatively calm so far. Wall St is still stalking record highs through it all for example as signs of the ongoing US recovery mount. So what gives? Today?s price action was interesting in that it started to show investors discriminating against European assets per se ? most visible in the inability of European stocks to follow Wall St higher and lunge lower in euro/dollar exchange rate. European bank stocks and bonds have been knocked back relatively sharply this week post-Dijsselbloem too. If this decoupling pattern were to continue, it will remain a story of the size of the economic hit and relative underperformance. But that would change if concerns morphed into euro exit and broader systemic fears and prepare for global markets at large to feel the heat again too. We?re not back there yet with the benefit of the doubt on OMTs and pressured policy reactions still largely conceded. But many of the underlying movements that might feed system-wide stresses ? what some term a ?slow panic? like deposit shifts etc ? will be impossible to monitor systematically by investors for many weeks yet and so nervy times are ahead as we enter Q2 after the Easter break.

Cyprus and European banks aside, next week will be about the US employment report and three of the Big Four central banks meeting Thurs. Will the ECB respond to the banking sector and consumer sentiment threats and ease rates or monetary conditions? It has plenty of real sector and inflation evidence already that Q1 underwhelmed in euro. The BoJ meeting will be as important with new governor Haruhiko Kuroda at the helm for the first time amid intense interest in how he will pursue the bank?s new aggressive reflation mandate.

Javi Marroquin: Kailyn Lowry Married

UPDATE: Kailyn is now pregnant!!! She and Javi are expecting a baby, so Isaac will be a big brother!!! So cute! We are so happy for the couple, and I hope that her pregnancy is featured on the show!!! Javi Marroquin is now Kailyn Lowry’s husband! I had no idea that the Teen Mom 2 star was married! Honestly, I was kind of holding out hope that she and Jo would get back together. I think in a different time and space, they could have made it work. Photo Credit: In Touch Teen Mom 2 is currently in the middle of airing on MTV and we are no where near Kailyn dating. She has just broken up with Jordan (for good, it seems), Jo told her he has moved on, and Kailyn is considering moving to Texas. Well, apparently Kailyn has moved on too. Sometime between then and now, she met and fell in love with Javi Marroquin, who is entering the Air Force. They wed in a courthouse ceremony before he left. Kailyn gave an interview back in November when she was hit with false rumors of her wedding. We get the idea, but here she did reveal some [...]

Nokia accuses Google of 'forcing' VP8 video codec on the world, uses patent system to resist it

Nokia accuses of 'forcing' VP8 video codec on the world, uses patent system to resist it

Just when Google thought everything was going swell with its open source VP8 video standard for the web, up pops one last hurdle. And it's a big one: Nokia has suddenly decided to use the patent system to try to prevent VP8 from being adopted as a free (or at least free-er) alternative to the license-laden H.264. Why would it do such a thing? Because, according to a statement given to FOSS Patents, the Finnish manufacturer believes VP8 isn't truly open. It describes the codec as a "proprietary technology" that offers "no advantages" over H.264 and that Google is "attempting to force" on others as part of its WebM project. What's more, Nokia claims VP8 infringes on its own intellectual property and says it isn't prepared to license any patents that may be required to let VP8 flourish. Oh dear. This problem may now need even more money thrown at it.

Ideal Home Show ? 2013 | The Guide To Gay Gardening

photo (5)If you?ve ever wanted any inspiration for your home and garden, then the Ideal Home Show is where it?s at. This year, Anglian Home Improvements invited me along to have a good old nosey through the stalls, and whilst you might not think it, there was some great gardening ideas on offer.

In addition the Low Cost Living House (a must-see if you?re thinking about reducing your energy bills or have a plot of land and want to build an eco-flat pack house ? I dare to dream), there are several little show gardens on offer. These are small and compact; so perfect if you?re living in a town or city and environment where space is at a premium. Like all show gardens, it?s important to take away?inspiration?rather than trying to re-make the entire look, as it?s often the case with show gardens that they?re just that ? for show, but not necessarily the most feasible backyard gardens.

photo (3)

I love this idea for maximising space and creating some height and structure in a small garden. The deck isn?t that high that it would intrude on neighbours, especially with some well placed fencing, but it does create space underneath. This could be used for planting shady species ? in this setting they had a small pool with moisture and shade loving ferns ? but it could also be a great garden storage area.

photo (6)? ??photo (2)

For entertaining purposes, the garden on the left is great. With raised beds, the plants will be more manageable and you?ll need to spend less time?gardening, and more time having friends and family over. Meanwhile, solar panels on your shed or garden office?s roof? Ideal?.I could do with that to power my laptop whilst I?m tapping away writing for the many hours of the day.

Another must-see is Anglian Home Improvement?s Only Fools and Horses stand. If you loved a bit of Del-boy and Rodney, you can see a mock up of their famous flat, along with a modern interpretation. There?s even a chance to get snapped pretending you?re in that famous chandelier scene. So, if you?ve got a chance, head down to Earls Court before April 1st, it?s definitely worth a look?you can spoil yourself to champagne and a fish platter too. ;)

Cheers, Anglian!

Michigan falls in CCHA title game; NCAA tournament streak over

Detroit ? Michigan was a goal away from doing the unthinkable, winning the final CCHA tournament championship after entering the weekend with a sub-.500 record.

It didn't happen.

Instead of the Wolverines scoring the go-ahead goal, it was Notre Dame's Austin Wuthrich who beat freshman goaltender Steve Racine with a wrist shot from between the circles 29 seconds into the third period to give the Irish a 2-1 lead. They went on to earn a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Joe Louis Arena, ending the CCHA's 42-year run.

The Irish (25-12-3) swept the five games between the teams this season, ending Michigan's run of 22 straight NCAA tournament appearances and 25 straight winning seasons.

Notre Dame outshot the Wolverines (18-19-3), 33-21, carrying the play in Michigan's zone for the majority of the opening two periods, getting the upperhand in shots by a 28-10 margin.

"We probably had as much momentum as we've had all year and we were in a good place," said Michigan coach Red Berenson, talking of the Wolverines' nine-game (8-0-1) unbeaten streak entering the game, including a 6-2 semifinal win Saturday over top-seeded Miami (Ohio). "We had a tough game last night against Miami and that was a huge win for our team just to get in to the final. Maybe we didn't have enough gas. We definitely were on a mission and we got cut short.

"Notre Dame got off to a great start. They were all over us and didn't give us much and we didn't get much."

Notre Dame has been a thorn in Michigan's side the last several years, defeating the Wolverines in the CCHA title game at JLA in 2007 and 2009, and also eliminating them when they were ranked No. 1 in a national semifinal in Denver in 2008.

"It was only fitting to end it (CCHA) between us," Notre Dame coach Jeff Jackson said of facing Michigan. "We've had so many great games between us when I was at Lake State and now here at Notre Dame. I have so much respect for them."

Notre Dame came out strong against Michigan, taking an 18-4 advantage on shots in the opening period before Derek DeBlois gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal with one minute left.

Racine kept the Wolverines in the game, making several big saves before DeBlois' goal. He finished with 30 saves.

Notre Dame All-CCHA first-team center Anders Lee scored his 20th goal midway through the second period to pull the Irish even, taking a pass from Jeff Costello and beating Racine from point-blank range.

"He was a wall at the beginning of the game, really all tournament," Lee said of Racine. "It was a relief to get that first goal to give confidence to the boys so it was a huge break for us.

"I felt we controlled the puck a lot. We were the ones dictating the play and for us to have that ability was a huge reason we succeeded."

Berenson still felt the Wolverines had a chance to pull the game out.

"Even after two periods I thought our team would bounce back in the third," Berenson said. "They tried, but that first goal on that first shift was a tough one and we just couldn't get it back."

Wuthrich took control of the puck after it bounced off teammate Mario Lucia's skate and flipped a wrist shot past Racine for his first point in more than a month.

"T.J. Tynan got the puck just inside the blueline and passed it down to Lucia and it went off of his skate and deflected to me and I had an open net," Wuthrich said.

Notre Dame goalie Steven Summerhays had 20 saves, including two of his best in the final minutes, stopping Andrew Copp and then Lee Moffie before Costello's empty-netter with 1:07 left clinched the first title for Notre Dame's senior class.

Michigan was trying to duplicate its run of 2010 when the Wolverines entered the CCHA tournament as a No. 7 seed, needing to win the championship to earn an NCAA tourney bid. They upset Michigan State in the quarterfinal and then defeated top-seeded Miami in the semifinal before winning the title with a title win over Northern Michigan.

Instead of the Wolverines winning their 10th CCHA tourney title in the last 20 years Sunday, they now must look to the future of competing in the Big Ten League next season. Notre Dame will play in Hockey East.

Israel says Syria reason for restoring Turkey ties

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister says concerns over the security of Syria's chemical weapons stockpile were the motivating factor in restoring relations with Turkey.

Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on his Facebook page Saturday that Israel and Turkey, which border Syria, need to communicate with each other over the issue.

The Syrian "crisis" and the possibility that al-Qaida-linked groups could acquire chemical weapons was "the main consideration," in restoring ties, he wrote.

Netanyahu phoned his Turkish counterpart Friday and apologized for a botched raid on a Gaza bound flotilla in 2010 that left eight Turks and one Turkish-American dead. Turkey demanded an apology as a condition for restoring ties.

Netanyahu had until now refused to apologize, saying Israeli soldiers acted in self-defense after being attacked by activists. Relations were tense before the flotilla incident.

Bill Ayers is now a feted ?visiting scholar? at Minnesota State University Moorhead

School officials at Minnesota State University Moorhead have selected left-wing radical and admitted terrorist Bill Ayers as the 2013 College of Education and Human Services ?visiting scholar.?

Campus Reform has the story.

In an announcement last month, MSUM proclaimed that Ayers?s campus-wide address would be called ?Teaching from the Heart: Education for Enlightenment and Freedom.?

Ayers reportedly spent three days on the school?s campus. Social justice was the big theme of his visit.

Steve Grineski, a professor in MSUM?s School of Teaching and Learning, said that Ayers?s radical past doesn?t bother the school?s administration.

?I guess if they had been really concerned they would have canceled his presentation and not allowed us to do it,? Grineski told Campus Reform.

Grineski added that he and his colleagues chose to celebrate and honor Ayers because of his long history of trying to commingle own social justice principles with the American education system.

While Ayers received a stipend for his appearance at MSUM, the taxpayer-funded school refused to disclose how much it was.

Ayers, the son of a former CEO of Commonwealth Edison, was a co-founder of the Weather Underground, a communist revolutionary group.

He was involved in Chicago?s ?Days of Rag? riot in 1969 and fled prosecution after an accidental Greenwich Village townhouse explosion in 1970 killed three Weather Underground members who were preparing a bomb that prematurely detonated.

In a 2001 book, he admitted that he participated in bombings of the New York City Police Department headquarters, the U.S. Capitol Building and the Pentagon in the early 1970s. (RELATED: Inside TheDC?s dinner with former Weather Underground terrorists)

After his days as a federal fugitive ended (because charges were dropped due to illegal FBI snooping), Ayers earned a Ph.D. He eventually became a faculty member in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Ayers also achieved notoriety as a ?family friend? to a youngish politician named Barack Obama. Ayers and his wife, Bernadine Dohrn still live in Chicago?s Hyde Park neighborhood, where Obama formerly resided.

In 2010, the year he retired, Ayers was famously and unanimously denied emeritus status after a passionate speech by the University of Illinois system?s board chair Christopher G. Kennedy, who is the son of assassinated U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy.

Christopher Kennedy urged the board to vote against Ayers because Ayers had dedicated his 1974 book ?Prairie Fire? to a list of people including his father?s assassin,?Sirhan Sirhan.

Immigration Visas Slow For Iraqis Who Aided U.S. Efforts

SEATTLE -- Somehow the bullets that sprayed the car that Ubaida Mufrej was riding in with a group of Iraqi contractors didn't hit any of them, even though the driver had pushed through three armed men blocking a desert road outside of Baghdad that day in 2006.

The men ? subcontractors of an American company ? were coming back from handing over a water treatment facility to a local community as part of the U.S.-led rebuilding efforts in Iraq following the 2003 invasion. The men had left the handoff ceremony hurriedly after sensing animosity from some of the locals. But one of the subcontractors, Mufrej said, had to go back to finish part of the deal one day after the shooting.

"He got killed, right?" asked Ali Altamimi as he heard Mufrej's story.

Ten years after the Iraq War, Mufrej and his friend and business partner Altamimi sit in a cluttered office in Seattle's industrial district. The two men, engineers by training, left Iraq in 2009 and now own a business of buying cars at auctions and shipping parts back to Iraq.

Altamimi and Mufrej are two of tens of thousands of Iraqis who immigrated to the United States in the decade after the war.

Mufrej came here under a special visa for Iraqis who aided the U.S.-led efforts in Iraq.

But that program is set to end this year, despite the federal government only issuing less than a quarter of the special visas allocated. Vacant slots would be terminated, but applications in progress would continue to be processed.

Around 5,500 out of a possible 25,000 visas have been issued to Iraqis seeking to move to the United States, according to the U.S. State Department.

As the nation marks the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War, Republican and Democratic lawmakers are urging the Obama Administration to continue the visa program, which is set to expire at the end of September, and reform the application process to aid those who want to move to the U.S. Earlier this month, 19 members of Congress sent a letter to the Obama Administration with their concerns that also includes the special visa program for Afghanis who have worked with the U.S. in that war.

"Often, sterling (visa) applications are denied, and perhaps for good reason, but under the current program, the Chief of Missions (COM) at Embassies Baghdad and Kabul can approve or deny letters with little transparency into how that decision was made," the letter stated. "Further, (visa) applicants have no means of challenging or appealing an adverse COM decision."

Congress created the Special Immigrant Visa for Iraqis in 2008 with the aim of helping them move to the United States faster than the often protracted refugee process. The visa was made for men and women who risked their lives while working for businesses or reconstruction operations that helped U.S. forces in Iraq. The program allotted 5,000 visas annually until 2012. That limit only counts primary visa holders and not their families or dependents.

Advocates say the requirements to apply for the visas can be unnecessarily onerous, with extensive paperwork, timelines and agencies involved. The application process requires recommendations from U.S. military personnel, for example.

"The bigger problems are the delays in processing, the total lack of information given when someone is denied, and the lack of any appeal process," said Kirk Johnson, founder of The List Project To Resettle Iraqi Allies, an advocacy group.

The application also requires a "police certificate" from Iraqi authorities, which are not trusted by many Iraqis looking to apply, Mufrej said.

"The responsibility of the United States to the Iraqi people did not end with the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq," said Bob Carey of the International Rescue Committee, one of the largest refugee settlement organizations in the country.

Like Mufrej, Iraqis who were known to work for the U.S. government were often the target of killings, violence, kidnapping, death threats and other harassment.

"This story is the story of thousands," said Mufrej, who lost two uncles and a cousin to militia violence that plagued the country after the invasion. One uncle was kidnapped in 2006 and never seen again. "Probably, he died."

The State Department said the number of qualified applications for the visa has not exceeded the 25,000 allotted.

"We have established procedures to account for national security concerns and reduce chances of fraud in the process. We have an obligation to ensure that recipients of SIVs ? like all others who enter the United States ? do not pose a threat to our security. We have made demonstrable progress in bringing more Iraqis to the United States, while ensuring our security is upheld," the State Department said.

The State Department also pointed out that more than 80,000 Iraqis have been settled here through the refugee program. More than 10,000 people, both primary applicants and dependents, have come to the U.S. through the Special Immigrant Visa.

The List Project To Resettle Iraqi Allies said this week that the SIV program has a backlog of 1,500 applications. The group lobbied hard in 2007 to create the program.

To Johnson, a former USAID reconstruction manager in Fallujah, the State Department's focus on the lack of applications is curious.

"If they have too few people why is there a backlog of potentially thousands of names?" he asked.

Johnson said the effectiveness of the program solely lies on the Obama Administration.

"It's one thing to exist on paper, but the implementation matters," Johnson said. "After some time Iraqis began to see a mythical program, one that Americans announced and exists on websites but don't act on it. I think the word got out the SIV wasn't worth pursuing."

Fresh out of college, Mufrej worked under American engineering firms. The money was good and he believed he was helping his country, Mufrej said.

Mufrej says he was one of the lucky ones to get in line for the visa early, before it was required to get a background check through Iraqi authorities. He says many Iraqis don't trust local authorities and giving them personal information puts them in jeopardy.

Now, though, Mufrej and Altamimi are focused on building their business. Altamimi plans to bring his wife here when he becomes a citizen. They married after he resettled here and he couldn't immediately bring her here. He wants four children. Mufrej has the same plans with his fiance. Maybe five children for him.

In the U.S., the men have kept busy, taking road trips to California and plan to go to Texas next. They want to get to know their new country. The two men return to Iraq occasionally to see family and tend to their business, but they don't see returning to live there.

"You can't forget what happened. We lost too many family members," Mufrej said, shortly after taking a drag from a Marlboro.

Cops: Fake pilot arrested on US Airways flight after struggling with jump seat

By Lauren DiSanto, NBC10.com

A man caught impersonating a pilot was arrested after he boarded a plane scheduled to fly from Philadelphia International Airport to West Palm Beach, Fla, authorities said.

Philippe Jernnard, 61, of France, boarded the US Airways flight Wednesday night, according to the FBI.

NBC10's Rosemary Connors talked with airport police Capt. Michael Murphy who says that Jernnard was wearing an Air France shirt, had an Air France bag and presented a ticket to the gate agent and walked onto the plane.

Jernnard does not work for Air France, the airline said in a statement released Friday. "This person was not wearing an Air France uniform, badge or carrying an Air France crew baggage," the statement said. "Regarding the badge, it was a very poor fake badge, which in no way resembled the Air France Crew Member Certificate."

The gate agent told authorities that Jernnard had asked if there was any room in first class and was told "no."

According to the arrest report, Jernnard became irate after being told "no"?and told her that he hated Americans and began to argue with her.

When the gate agent finished boarding the flight and went to close the plane's doors for takeoff, the arrest report states that she saw Jernnard sitting in the jump seat behind the captain's seat and his carry-on bag was stowed in the cockpit.

?She just assumes he takes his seat in coach and when she goes in to inform co-captain of the number of passengers on the flight that?s when she kind of recognizes he?s out of place,? said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker.

According to the arrest report, the agent told Jernnard that he couldn't sit there unless he filled out paperwork and the captain told him to return to his assigned seat.

Police say Jernnard started arguing and that's when they notified authorities.

The captain and first officer told authorities the man told them he was a pilot with Air France and knew how to fly 747s, but they became suspicious when he couldn't figure out how to open the jump seat.

After Jernnard was taken off the plane, police found an Air France ID card that had been changed to match his name.

Jernnard was arrested and charged with criminal trespass, tampering with records, impersonating a person privately employed and false ID to law enforcement. He will be charged federally?Friday morning.

Apple rolls out fix for password reset security hole, iForgot site back up

Apple?s iForgot password reset page is now back online, and iMore has verified that the security hole, discovered earlier today in Apple?s password reset page, has been closed.

Previously, after providing a victim?s Apple ID and date of birth, an attacker could send a URL to Apple that would change the password for that account, without needing to answer any security questions. In response, Apple blocked access to the password reset page, and a short while later took the entire site down in light of another loophole that still allowed the attack to be performed.

This vulnerability came at an interesting time, just a day after Apple began to roll out its two-step verification system. Users who had already enrolled in the new system seem to have been immune from the password reset vulnerability.

Unfortunately some users were held in a three-day waiting period for enabling two-step verification, while others live in countries where two-step verification is not currently available. T

oday?s events serve as an important example of why two-step verification is a good idea. People interested in getting two-step verification set up can find out how with iMore?s tutorial

Making a positive?lifestyle change is not easy, but with someone to give you direction and confidence it makes the change less daunting. What I mean is someone holding your hand up the mountain, someone giving you confidence that you can change, someone who genuinely?wants to see you succeed, much like we do with our?clients as we build a relationships of trust and understanding.

Trestle Tree LogoWe couldn?t be more excited, then, to welcome modthink?s?newest client,?TrestleTree, a health transformation organization?that believes long-term, sustained behavior change is achievable for everyone, regardless of their level of motivation or readiness to change.?Building relationships is in TrestleTree?s DNA as they work with each participant to help them understand who they are and how to make positive changes in their lives that lead to long term indoctrinated behaviors.

In our first meeting with TrestleTree?we both used terms like DNA, culture and relationship building; it was obvious that we saw the world through the same kind of glasses. But what solidified our desire to work together was a little bit of serendipity. We often use the word ?sherpa? when describing our style of social coaching?we?re here to guide you through social media?and when we said it the TrestleTree team looked at each other wondrously until they told us that they?d considered changing their lifestyle ?coaches? to lifestyle ?sherpas.?

Sweet!

When two groups with such genuine intentions meet, really exciting things can happen. So we?re excited about what?s in store for our relationship with Trestletree!

Obama in West Bank: Palestinians 'deserve a state of their own'

Just 24 hours after President Obama met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian National Authority, welcomed the president to Ramallah, in their first meeting in over a year. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

President Barack Obama spoke critically of Israeli settlement activity in Palestinian territories and reaffirmed his commitment to the creation of "an independent and sovereign state of Palestine" in a Thursday news conference in the West Bank.?

"We cannot give up on the search for peace, no matter how hard it is. ... Too much is at stake," the president said during the joint news conference with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas?on the second day of his first official trip to Israel.

Obama reaffirmed the "difficult" goal of a two-state solution, adding that Israel's program of settlements was unhelpful and did not "advance the cause of peace."

When asked whether he thought a halt to further settlement activity was required before peace talks could begin in earnest, Obama demurred.?

"If the only way to even begin the conversation is that we get everything right from the outset ? then we?re never going to get to the broader issue, which is how you actually structure a state of Palestine that is sovereign and contiguous," the president said.

"The core issue right now is how do we get sovereignty for the Palestinian people and ensure security for the Israeli people," he added. "If we solve those two problems, the settlement problem will be solved."

Obama said that had been the focus of the talks he had just conducted with Abbas, which lasted about an hour and occurred just before the news conference, during which Obama praised Abbas for his leadership and sharply criticized rival group Hamas for the "misery" of Palestinians in Gaza.

President Barack Obama embraces Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas upon his arrival at the presidential compound in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Thursday.

He sounded hopeful about Abbas and the Palestinian Authority and reiterated U.S. willingness to help.

"The United States is deeply committed to the creation of an independent and sovereign state of Palestine," he said, adding, "Simply, Palestinians deserve a state of their own."

For his part, Abbas said he had "renewed confidence" in U.S. assistance with the peace process after meeting with Obama.

"We have conducted a good and useful round of talks," he said through an interpreter.

In calling for an end to Israeli construction of settlements in Palestinian territories, Abbas warned that continued building of the sites was causing Palestinians, particularly the younger generation, to lose hope that Israel and a sovereign Palestine could peacefully co-exist.

When young Palestinians see the settlements, he said, "they do not trust the two-state solution anymore, and this is very dangerous" for the future.

Earlier, Obama had been greeted cordially by Abbas, and the two hugged, after his helicopter touched down in Ramallah.

Despite the discussions and positive speeches,?little actual progress on the peace process?was expected during the trip.?

On Tuesday in Ramallah, Palestinian police scuffled with scores of demonstrators protesting Obama's visit, and?two rockets?that may have been a show of protest were fired into southern Israel close to the border with the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip early Thursday.

Obama began the second day of his trip with some virtual time travel.

After viewing the ancient Dead Sea Scrolls, Obama toured a technology exhibition at the Israel Museum to have a look at cutting-edge products being developed in the country, including a potentially revolutionary battery that uses air and water to release energy stored in aluminum.

The makers say it could power a car that would have to stop only for occasional water fill-ups.

President Barack Obama with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (right) inspect a display of the Dead Sea Scrolls at a museum in Jerusalem, Thursday.

Obama seemed to show great interest in the battery, as well as some of the other new technologies on display, and despite the tensions surrounding his visit, he managed to interject a bit of humor.

He watched intently as a robot nicknamed "the snake" -- developed at Israel's prestigious Technion institute to help rescue workers reach nooks and crannies where people are trapped -- began wriggling on the display table.

"My wife would not like this," he said.

He seemed less interested in some exhibits than others. While viewing the "Mobileye" system designed to warn drivers of imminent roadway dangers, he asked if the system would frequently produce loud beeps as it did in the exhibition hall and speculated that it could be an irritant.

The president appeared eager to move on when asked if he wanted to watch a further demonstration of the device.

"Oh," he said, before politely standing, arms-crossed, and watching a developer operate a driving simulator. The president joked that that the developer was "a bad driver" before strolling off.

Natural climate swings contribute more to increased monsoon rainfall than global warming

Mar. 20, 2013 ? Natural swings in the climate have significantly intensified Northern Hemisphere monsoon rainfall, showing that these swings must be taken into account for climate predictions in the coming decades, a new study finds.

The findings are published in the March 18 online publication of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Monsoon rainfall in the Northern Hemisphere impacts about 60% of the World population in Southeast Asia, West Africa and North America. Given the possible impacts of global warming, solid predictions of monsoon rainfall for the next decades are important for infrastructure planning and sustainable economic development. Such predictions, however, are very complex because they require not only pinning down how humanmade greenhouse gas emissions will impact the monsoons and monsoon rainfall, but also a knowledge of natural long-term climate swings, about which little is known so far.

To tackle this problem an international team of scientists around Meteorology Professor Bin Wang at the International Pacific Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa, examined climate data to see what happened in the Northern Hemisphere during the last three decades, a time during which the global-mean surface-air temperature rose by about 0.4?C. Current theory predicts that the Northern Hemisphere summer monsoon circulation should weaken under anthropogenic global warming.

Wang and his colleagues, however, found that over the past 30 years, the summer monsoon circulation, as well as the Hadley and Walker circulations, have all substantially intensified. This intensification has resulted in significantly greater global summer monsoon rainfall in the Northern Hemisphere than predicted from greenhouse-gas-induced warming alone: namely a 9.5% increase, compared to the anthropogenic predicted contribution of 2.6% per degree of global warming.

Most of the recent intensification is attributable to a cooling of the eastern Pacific that began in 1998. This cooling is the result of natural long-term swings in ocean surface temperatures, particularly swings in the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation or mega-El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation, which has lately been in a mega-La Ni?a or cool phase. Another natural climate swing, called the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, also contributes to the intensification of monsoon rainfall.

"These natural swings in the climate system must be understood in order to make realistic predictions of monsoon rainfall and of other climate features in the coming decades," says Wang. "We must be able to determine the relative contributions of greenhouse-gas emissions and of long-term natural swings to future climate change."

Women abused as children more likely to have children with autism

Mar. 20, 2013 ? Women who experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse as children are more likely to have a child with autism than women who were not abused, according to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). Those who experienced the most serious abuse had the highest likelihood of having a child with autism -- three-and-a-half times more than women who were not abused.

"Our study identifies a completely new risk factor for autism," said lead author Andrea Roberts, research associate in the HSPH Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. "Further research to understand how a woman's experience of abuse is associated with autism in her children may help us better understand the causes of autism and identify preventable risk factors."

The study appears online March 20, 2013 and in the May 2013 print issue of JAMA Psychiatry. It is the first to explore the relationship between a mother's exposure to childhood abuse and risk of autism in her children.

The authors examined data from more than 50,000 women enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study II. They found that it was not just women exposed to the most serious levels of abuse who had higher risk of having a child with autism, but also a large number of women who experienced moderate abuse. While about 2% of women reported the most serious abuse, even women in the top 25% of abuse severity -- which included mostly women who experienced more moderate levels of abuse -- were 60% more likely to have a child with autism compared with women who did not experience abuse. These results suggest that childhood abuse is not only very harmful for the person who directly experiences it, but may also increase risk for serious disabilities in the next generation, the authors said.

Delving further, the researchers looked at nine pregnancy-related risk factors to see if they were linked to higher risk of having a child with autism in women who were abused as children. These nine risk factors -- including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and smoking -- have been previously associated with an increased likelihood of having a child with autism.

The researchers did find that women who had experienced abuse as children had a higher risk for each of the pregnancy-related risk factors that were examined. Surprisingly, though, those risk factors accounted for only 7% of the increased likelihood of having a child with autism among women who were abused.

Given that these factors accounted for so little of the association between mother's experience of abuse and risk of autism in her children, the authors speculated that other factors may be playing a role. One possibility, they said, is that long-lasting effects of abuse on women's biological systems, such as the immune system and stress-response system, are responsible for increasing their likelihood of having a child with autism. More research is needed to tease out the mechanisms involved in the maternal childhood abuse-autism link, the authors said.

"Childhood abuse is associated with a wide array of health problems in the person who experiences it, including both mental health outcomes like depression and anxiety, and physical health outcomes like obesity and lung disease. Our research suggests that the effects of childhood abuse may also reach across generations," said senior author Marc Weisskopf, associate professor of environmental and occupational epidemiology at HSPH.

Given the findings in this study, the authors suggest increasing efforts to prevent childhood abuse, and suggest that clinicians focus more strongly on limiting pregnancy-related autism risk factors, particularly among women who experienced abuse in childhood.
