Apple keeps anonymized Siri data for up to two years for testing and improvement purposes

After privacy concerns were raised regarding data it gets from Siri, Apple has revealed that it keeps that data for up to two years. Apple generates a random string of numbers to associate with your voice data, rather than using your Apple ID, and any Siri data they collect from you goes under that number. Data, however, is decoupled from that number. According to Wired an Apple spokesperson explained:

Once the voice recording is six months old, Apple ?disassociates? your user number from the clip, deleting the number from the voice file. But it keeps these disassociated files for up to 18 more months for testing and product improvement purposes.

If, however, a user were to turn Siri off, any identifiers, including the data itself, is deleted. While the fact that Apple keeps Siri data for two years, whatever protections are in place, might make some wary, we should keep in mind that Siri and Apple are not unique in keeping data. We put so much of ourselves online now, and a lot of the time we don?t know where it goes. It?s up to each user to decide who to trust with their data, and how much they trust.

Technique unlocks design principles of quantum biology

Apr. 19, 2013 ? University of Chicago researchers have created a synthetic compound that mimics the complex quantum dynamics observed in photosynthesis and may enable fundamentally new routes to creating solar-energy technologies. Engineering quantum effects into synthetic light-harvesting devices is not only possible, but also easier than anyone expected, the researchers report in the April 19 edition of Science.

The researchers have engineered small molecules that support long-lived quantum coherences. Coherences are the macroscopically observable behavior of quantum superpositions. Superpositions are a fundamental quantum mechanical concept, exemplified by the classic Schrodinger's Cat thought experiment, in which a single quantum particle such as an electron occupies more than one state simultaneously.

Quantum effects are generally negligible in large, hot, disordered systems. Nevertheless, the recent ultrafast spectroscopy experiments in UChicago chemistry Prof. Greg Engel's laboratory have shown that quantum superpositions may play a role in the near perfect quantum efficiency of photosynthetic light harvesting, even at physiological temperatures.

Photosynthetic antennae -- the proteins that organize chlorophylls and other light-absorbing molecules in plants and bacteria -- support superpositions that survive for anomalously long times. Many researchers have proposed that organisms have evolved a means of protecting these superpositions. The result: improved efficiency in transferring energy from absorbed sunlight to the parts of the cell that convert solar energy to chemical energy. The newly reported results demonstrate that his particular manifestation of quantum mechanics can be engineered into human-made compounds.

The researchers modified fluorescein -- the same molecule once used to dye the Chicago River green for St. Patrick's Day -- and then linked different pairs of these dyes together using a rigid bridging structure. The resulting molecules were able to recreate the important properties of chlorophyll molecules in photosynthetic systems that cause coherences to persist for tens of femtoseconds at room temperature.

"That may not sound like a very long time -- a femtosecond is a millionth of a billionth of a second," said study co-author Dugan Hayes, a UChicago graduate student in chemistry. "But the movement of excitations through these systems also occurs on this ultrafast timescale, meaning that these quantum superpositions can play an important role in energy transfer."

To detect evidence of long-lived superpositions, the researchers created a movie of energy flow in the molecules using highly engineered laboratories and state-of-the-art femtosecond laser systems. Three precisely controlled laser pulses are directed into the sample, causing it to emit an optical signal that is captured and directed into a camera.

By scanning the time delays between the arriving laser pulses, the researchers create a movie of energy flow in the system, encoded as a series two-dimensional spectra. Each two-dimensional spectrum is a single frame of the movie, and contains information about where energy resides in the system and what pathways it has followed to get there.

These movies show relaxation from high energy states toward lower energy states as time proceeds, as well as oscillating signals in very specific regions of the signal, or quantum beats. "Quantum beats are the signature of quantum coherence, arising from the interference between the different energetic states in the superposition, similar to the beating heard when two instruments that are slightly out of tune with each other try to play the same note," Hayes explained.

Computer simulations have shown that quantum coherences work in photosynthetic antennae to prevent excitations from getting trapped on their way to the reaction center, where the conversion to chemical energy begins. In one interpretation, as the excitation moves through the antenna, it remains in a superposition of all possible paths at once, making it inevitable that it proceeds down the proper path. "Until these coherences were observed in synthetic systems, it remained dubious that such a complex phenomenon could be recreated outside of nature," Hayes said.

Nanoparticles found in everyday items can inhibit fat storage: Gold nanoparticles accelerate aging

Apr. 18, 2013 ? New research reveals that pure gold nanoparticles found in everyday items such as personal care products, as well as drug delivery, MRI contrast agents and solar cells can inhibit adipose (fat) storage and lead to accelerated aging and wrinkling, slowed wound healing and the onset of diabetes. The researchers, led by Tatsiana Mironava, a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Molecular Engineering at Stony Brook University, detail their research in the journal Nanotoxicology.

Together with co-author Dr. Marcia Simon, Professor of Oral Biology and Pathology at Stony Brook University, and Director of the University's Living Skin Bank, a world-class facility that has developed skin tissue for burn victims and various wound therapies, the researchers tested the impact of nanoparticles in vitro on multiple types of cells, including adipose (fat) tissue, to determine whether their basic functions were disrupted when exposed to very low doses of nanoparticles. Subcutaneous adipose tissue acts as insulation from heat and cold, functions as a reserve of nutrients, and is found around internal organs for padding, in yellow bone marrow and in breast tissue.

They discovered that the human adipose-derived stromal cells -- a type of adult stem cells -- were penetrated by the gold nanoparticles almost instantly and that the particles accumulated in the cells with no obvious pathway for elimination. The presence of the particles disrupted multiple cell functions, such as movement; replication (cell division); and collagen contraction; processes that are essential in wound healing.

According to the researchers, the most disturbing finding was that the particles interfered with genetic regulation, RNA expression and inhibited the ability to differentiate into mature adipocytes or fat cells. "Reductions caused by gold nanoparticles can result in systemic changes to the body," said Professor Mironava. "Since they have been considered inert and essentially harmless, it was assumed that pure gold nanoparticles would also be safe. Evidence to the contrary is beginning to emerge."

This study is also the first to demonstrate the impact of nanoparticles on adult stem cells, which are the cells our body uses for continual organ regeneration. It revealed that adipose derived stromal cells involved in regeneration of multiple organs, including skin, nerve, bone, and hair, ignored appropriate cues and failed to differentiate when exposed to nanoparticles. The presence of gold nanoparticles also reduced adiponectin, a protein involved in regulating glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown, which helps to regulate metabolism.

"We have learned that careful consideration and the choice of size, concentration and the duration of the clinical application of gold nanoparticles is warranted," said Professor Mironava. "The good news is that when the nanoparticles were removed, normal functions were eventually restored."

"Nanotechnology is continuing to be at the cutting edge of science research and has opened new doors in energy and materials science," said co-author, Miriam Rafailovich, PhD, Chief Scientist of the Advanced Energy Center and Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Stony Brook. "Progress comes with social responsibility and ensuring that new technologies are environmentally sustainable. These results are very relevant to achieving these goals."

The research, funded by the National Science Foundation Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSEC) and Polymer Programs, was a collaboration of Stony Brook University and New York State Stem Cell Science (NYSTEM). The paper was also co-authored by Michael Hadjiargyrou, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Life Sciences at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and former Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook.

Rats' and bats' brains work differently on the move

Apr. 18, 2013 ? A new study of brain rhythms in bats and rats challenges a widely used model -- based on studies in rodents -- of how animals navigate their environment. To get a clearer picture of the processes at work in the mammal brain during spatial navigation, neuroscientists must closely study a broad range of animals, say the two University of Maryland College Park scientists involved in the study.

In the April 19, 2013 issue of Science, the University of Maryland researchers and two colleagues at Boston University reported significant differences between rats' and bats' brain rhythms in a part of the brain used in navigation.

The researchers focused on specialized cells that process spatial information in a region called the medial entorhinal cortex, a hub of neural networks for memory and navigation. Earlier experiments showed rats' brain cells in this area fire continuously in a rhythmic electrical signal called a theta wave when the animals are navigating through space. Some models of the brain treat theta waves as a key element of spatial navigation in all mammals, but this idea is based on rodent research, Moss said.

The Boston University-University of Maryland team tested for rhythmic electrical responses at the cellular level in bat and rat brain tissue. They found evidence for theta waves in the rat cells. But in the bat cells these waves were absent, said Moss, who has studied bats since the 1980s.

"This raises questions as to whether theta rhythms are actually doing what the spatial navigation theory proposes," said a co-author, UMD biology researcher Katrina MacLeod. "To understand brains, including ours, we really must study neural activity in a variety of animals."

Humans and other mammals share many common features of brain organization, and the differences in theta waves between bats and rats raises questions about how spatial information is represented in all brains.

Google Extends Chrome Download Warnings To Include Files That Could Allow The Installation Of Malicious Extensions

chrome-+-logoChrome will soon warn users when they are about to download software that could try to change how the browser handles extensions. Specifically, this extension to the company’s Safe Browsing system looks for binaries that could allow potentially malicious extensions to be installed in the browser without the user’s knowledge. This new feature will roll out within the next few days. Last December, Google already disabled silent extension installations by default. According to today’s announcement, enabling this protection mechanism “resulted in noticeable performance improvements in Chrome and improved user experience.” The new feature builds on this and also tries to prevent malicious extensions from ever making it into your browser. Google says it will identify binaries that “violate Chrome?s standard mechanisms for deploying extensions, flagging such binaries as malware.” Most of these malicious extensions try to get around the silent installation blockers, the company says. Once they get past this, an extension can’t be uninstalled or disabled by the user. Some binaries, Google says, also try to manipulate Chrome’s preferences to allow the browser to accept silent installs again and often come bundles with a malicious extension which they then immediately try to install, too, of course. Google says its “recent measures” will detect and block these kinds of malicious extensions, but it doesn’t go into detail about how exactly it plans to do so.

Traveling Is Easy: Cruise ship suffers stopped-up toilets

(CNN) -- Another cruise ship, another problem with malfunctioning toilets.

This time, Carnival Corp. subsidiary Princess Cruises had passengers feeling the impact of toilets that wouldn't flush.

On April 11, the cruise line's Crown Princess was on a seven-day Caribbean cruise when a blockage within the ship's vacuum toilet system rendered 410 stateroom toilets inoperable fro5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., according to Princess Cruises spokeswoman Karen Candy. The ship has more than 1,500 cabins.

"A small number of passengers continued to experience problems over the next few days which were addressed by the shipboard technical team," Candy wrote in an e-mail.

The ship's itinerary wasn't affected by the flushing problems, and affected passengers were offered $50 apiece in compensation, Candy wrote. "The blockages have been addressed and we are continuing to review the situation to ensure that the system is working with optimum pressure levels."

Although Candy didn't answer questions about the cause of the problem, members of the CruiseCritic.com website discussed the possibility of passengers tossing prohibited objects into the toilets and causing the blockage.

"Toilet problems can happen on any ship when passengers flush the wrong things down the toilet," wrote member Astro Flyer, who was not aboard the Crown Princess.

In February, an engine room fire left the Carnival Triumph adrift in the Gulf of Mexico, with passengers reporting overflowing toilets and human waste running down the walls in some parts of the ship. On a March cruise, the Carnival Dream lost power, and some toilets stopped working. Both ships are part of Carnival Cruise Line, another subsidiary of Carnival Corp.

Candy wrote that "passengers were kept continuously updated about the progress of the repairs." But a CruiseCritic member posting under the handle EB and Curly said they were in an affected cabin and "were never informed as to the status of repairs." However, they were "only totally without a toilet for about 24 hours. It did overflow one night and we had to call maintenance to come up at 1:00 a.m."

CruiseCritic.com reported that the ship left Galveston, Texas, on April 13 for its scheduled trans-Atlantic repositioning cruise to Europe.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 (Wi-Fi)

Do you doodle? If you think best with a pen in your hand, Samsung's new Galaxy Note 8.0 is the finest tablet available. Samsung's S Pen and the company's broad support for writing and drawing still set the Galaxy Note line apart from every other tablet on the market. But the Galaxy Note 8.0's super-premium $399.99 (list) price in the world of smaller, much-less-expensive tablets will make this a cult classic, not a blockbuster. It's just too expensive.

Physical Features
The Galaxy Note 8.0 is made from plastic, but it doesn't feel flimsy. It's very tightly built, glossy and white, with chrome trim. The 8-inch, 1,280-by-800 LCD screen is surrounded by a surprisingly large bezel. Considering that the tablet's software includes an excellent palm-rejection feature, there's no reason to have such a roomy edge. The display is bright with true colors, although they're not as hypersaturated as the OLED screen Samsung uses on the Galaxy Tab 7.7, for instance. A 5-megapixel camera sticks out of the back with a slight bulge.

The Galaxy Note 8.0's S Pen digitizer pen fits into a slot in the corner of the tablet, and there's also a MicroSD card slot on the side panel. There's no removable battery or SIM card slot, and I think the lack of a removable battery contributes to the tightness of the build. At 8.3 by 5.35 by 0.30 inches (HWD) and 12 ounces, it's quite comfortable (if a little slick) when held in one hand. That's especially important for a tablet like this, where you're likely to be holding the tablet in one hand and the S Pen in the other.

Android and Performance
The Galaxy Note 8.0 is really fast. It runs a heavily skinned version of Android 4.1.2 on a speedy quad-core Exynos 4412 processor at 1.6GHz, with 2GB of RAM. In terms of raw processor speed, it's the fastest Android tablet we've seen yet, scoring 16,604 on the Antutu performance benchmark and running the Sunspider Javascript benchmark in 10 seconds. A high Browsermark score spoke to swift Web browsing and GLBenchmark gaming frame rate scores were very competitive with other tablets in its class, though it looks like they'll be outpaced once tablets with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 processor come on line.

The Note 8 supports Wi-Fi on the 2.4Hz and 5GHz bands, and I had no problem connecting to 802.11g and 802.11n routers. The tablet also packs Bluetooth 4.0 and satellite GPS, but not NFC. International versions of this tablet offer cellular connectivity, but that's not available in the U.S.

There's a lot of custom software here. I'll get to two of the key applications below, but Samsung has customized every aspect of Android. We've got Awesome Note HD, a note-taking app; ChatOn, Samsung's chat service, Flipboard, Samsung's Game Hub game store, Music Hub music store, Paper Artist (a sketching program), Polaris Office, custom note-taking and calendar apps, and S Voice voice commands.?

The S Pen, a plastic stylus with a button on it, wakes up the tablet when you slide it out of its slot in the corner. Twiddle some settings, and you can have text input default to handwriting recognition when you're using the S Pen. I found that Note 8's pen input to be cleaner and more responsive than the pen input on the Galaxy Note 10.1, probably thanks to that extra processor speed. The pen uses Wacom technology, so it's pressure-sensitive and has palm rejection. It still missed the occasional tap on the screen when I was trying to draw a lot of little dots, though.

But the presence of the pen really makes the Note live up to its name. Add the support for split-screen multitasking (two apps on one screen), and you can take notes while surfing the Web or doodle a graphic to insert in an office document, for instance. Just as I found on the Galaxy Note 10.1, this tablet is excellent for productivity.

Samsung added some new S Pen features to match the Galaxy Note II and the forthcoming Galaxy S4, most notably AirView, the ability to hover your pen over some types of content to preview it. As that doesn't work in the Gmail app or Chrome browser, though, I didn't find it terribly useful.

The more you use (or want to use) the S Pen, the more you'll like this tablet. My wife is an artist, so I see the appeal immediately; the ability to draw with accurate pressure sensitivity and hand rejection in a range of art apps, or scribble quick notes in S Note, is something no other tablet can match without expensive add-ons. This is the best consumer pen tablet you can buy.

Battery life was disappointing. In our battery test, we play back a video with the screen set to maximum brightness and Wi-Fi switched on, and the Galaxy Note 8.0 got the shortest result in its class, only 5 hours, 35 minutes. Compare that with the Amazon Kindle Fire HD's 7 hours, the iPad mini's 7:37 and the Nexus 7's 10:50 and you'll see the issue.

Cameras and Multimedia
Like with most tablets, the Galaxy Tab 8.0's two cameras are lackluster. Samsung should have probably omitted the 5-megapixel main camera to cut the high price down. It shoots thoroughly mediocre photos. They're acceptable in full outdoor light, although there's visible distortion at the edges of frames. In cloudy conditions, shutter speeds get a bit low, and indoors, shutter speeds are generally always low enough to ensure softness. Dynamic range issues washed out bright backgrounds. The 1-megapixel front camera is grainy and also had very low shutter speeds indoors.

The main camera records 720p video, while the front camera does VGA. Indoors and out, I got washed-out 30-frame-per-second videos on the main camera and 25fps on the front camera.

Media playback is a much happier story. The Galaxy Tab 8.0 comes with 16GB of internal memory plus a MicroSD memory card slot that supports up to 64GB cards. Samsung's video player has always been top of the line, supporting MP4, H.264, DivX, Xvid and WMV files up to 1080p; you can play them on an HDTV through an MHL cable or DLNA wireless.?

Music format support is similarly comprehensive, and Samsung's music player has a nice multi-pane interface, a bunch of equalizer settings and a fun, silly option called "music square" which attempts to sort your music by mood. Audio through both wired and Bluetooth headphones was fine. The bottom-ported stereo speakers aren't as punchy as the Galaxy Note 10.1's front-ported pair, but they're also fine.

The tablet's universal remote features are its second big focus. Like the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, the Galaxy Note 8.0 has an infrared blaster which can control TVs and home theater equipment. It works best with Samsung's WatchON app; the tabet also comes with Peel Smart Remote, but I couldn't get it to work properly and Samsung couldn't figure out why.

WatchOn does a good job of showing you interesting programs you can watch, combined with a more traditional, grid-style electronic program guide with filters and favorites. The program had no problem controlling Samsung or Sharp TVs and Dish and TiVo boxes in our lab.

You can also flip over to lists of movies and TV shows available through Blockbuster or Samsung's Media Hub app. I've heard Netflix support might come soon, too, and that will make it even better. To watch video-on-demand content on your television rather than your tablet, though, your TV needs to support DLNA.

But for DVR owners, WatchON has the the same fatal flaw that similar solutions on Samsung, HTC and Sony devices all do: The contents of your DVR are totally opaque. You can't schedule recordings; rather, if you tell it you want to watch a show later, it sets a calendar alert. That feels insanely primitive, a 1990s approach for a 2013 tablet.

Conclusions
When Apple launched the iPad mini, I said it inaugurated a new age of premium-priced small tablets. So what should I call a tablet that costs 20 percent more than Apple's??

The Galaxy Note 8.0 has a bunch of features you don't see on Apple's tablets, the Google Nexus 7, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) or the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, most notably the S Pen and infrared TV remote. While you can duplicate those functions with other tablets, they require costly, clunky accessories.

In a world where you can get a top-notch Android tablet for $200 and an iPad mini for $329, though, it's just too hard for me to recommend that you spend $400 instead. Artists, especially, will adore the Galaxy Note 8.0. But our Editors' Choice for small tablets, the best mainstream choice, remains the much less expensive, still very-capable Google Nexus 7.

Lincoln impersonators rub gangly elbows in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? John Cooper's obsession with being Abraham Lincoln began one score and five years ago. Its beginnings were humble.

Tall, lean and bearded, the Ohio man already bore a passing resemblance to the Rail Splitter, or so he was told. One Halloween he donned a frock coat he found in his mother's attic, and his wife fashioned a stovepipe hat out of cardboard. A little spray paint on his beard, and he was ready for trick or treat with the kids.

He was so convincing that before long he was invited to come to schools in costume around Presidents Day. Then people started paying him to show up at their events in character to talk about the 16th president.

The rest is history.

But honestly, this is a huge weekend for the 62-year-old Cooper, who is helping to host a gathering of impersonators of the Great Emancipator in Columbus.

The 19th annual convention of the Association of Lincoln Presenters has attracted around three dozen Abes in chin beards and full regalia, along with 30 or so Mary Todd Lincolns and an array of other Civil War-era figures, including Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.

"I tell people I think we hold this convention just so we can run around in our costumes all weekend," says Cooper, a retired Defense Department parts manager.

In Columbus, the Lincoln impersonators will literally walk where he walked ? and where he lay in state after he was assassinated in 1865. Lincoln gave speeches at the Ohio Statehouse in 1859 and 1861, and his casket rested in the building's rotunda for six hours on its way from Washington back to Illinois for burial. More than 50,000 stood in line to pay their respects.

On Friday morning, Jerry Payn, a Lincoln from Wooster, Ohio, stepped to the podium in the Ohio House chamber and delivered word-for-word the speech given by Lincoln in the same room just before his inauguration in 1861.

Payn, a 74-year-old retired junior high school science teacher, has been playing Lincoln since 1999 and does as many as 100 gigs a year. He says the key to being a great Lincoln is gaining in-depth knowledge of his life, speeches and writings.

"When I first started, I'm ashamed to say I was one of the dumbest guys there ever was about Abraham Lincoln," says Payn, whose wife, Marilyn, has become a Mary Todd Lincoln impersonator. "At this point I can talk about anything about his whole life."

The Lincolns have a certain spring in their step this year thanks to a wave of attention brought by the Steven Spielberg movie "Lincoln," which earned an Oscar for Daniel Day-Lewis for his portrayal of Honest Abe. Some of the impersonators say the excitement has led to more work for them. They can fetch several hundred dollars and up for appearances.

On Friday night, all the Lincolns planned to go to a high school in suburban Columbus to see a student production of "Our American Cousin," the play Lincoln was watching when he was shot at Ford's Theater in Washington on April 15, 1865.

Organizers said the crack of a snare drum would mark the exact moment in the show when the shot was fired, and a student portraying Lincoln's wife would add a scream for dramatic effect.

One of the Abe impersonators in town for the convention, Robert Broski, 60, who lives near Los Angeles, looked so much like Lincoln even without the whiskers that he was persuaded to portray him in an independent film about five years ago.

"I grew the beard, and I looked in the mirror and I said, 'Oh, my gosh, this is my destiny. This is who I am!'" says Broski, who works at a Home Depot. He has parlayed that into a couple of Lincoln gigs a month, including appearances in a few gags on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show.

The Lincolns all seem to agree that one doesn't really have to be blessed ? or cursed, some might say ? with a great physical resemblance to the president.

The Abes in Columbus range from well under 6 feet tall to Lincoln's actual height of 6-foot-4. Some are barrel-chested, some slight. There are gray beards and black beards, and one beardless Lincoln. The costumes vary greatly in extravagance.

"We're presenters. We're not impersonators, necessarily," Broski says. "You don't have to look like Mr. Lincoln. But if you take a beard, a top hat and a frock coat and put it on, people instantly know who you are. What's important is getting across his character, his honesty, his integrity."

(AP) ? Professional networking website LinkedIn is paying about $90 million to acquire Pulse, which makes an e-reader platform used on mobile devices.

More than 30 million people worldwide use Pulse's e-reader applications on devices running both Apple and Android-based operating systems. The San Francisco-based company was founded in 2010 by Akshay Kothari and Ankit Gupta while they were students at Stanford University.

The deal, which is expected to close in the second quarter, is a combination of 90 percent stock and 10 percent cash.

Following the close, Pulse employees will join LinkedIn at its headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.

Testimony expected on casinos in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Casino and racetrack supporters made their case Wednesday for allowing Texans to vote on a constitutional amendment to expand gambling, promising billions in new revenues and thousands of jobs.

But the biennial push to allow casinos in Texas still faces an uphill battle with some conservatives insisting that Texas remain one of only 10 states that ban such facilities. The Republican Party of Texas platform also opposes any expansion of gambling and calls for the repeal of the Texas State Lottery.

Sen. John Carona, R-Dallas, said the constitutional amendment he introduced is designed to bring together casino operators, racetrack owners and American Indian tribes that have worked against each other in the past while addressing the concerns of those who oppose all gambling.

Carona said he thinks Texas voters should get a chance to vote on the measure, which would limit the locations of 21 casinos.

"I'm Southern Baptists and I don't gamble, but I like to go to Las Vegas for the shows," Carona said, emphasizing the tourism possibilities. "We put everything into the constitutional amendment so that the only way we can change it is if the people of Texas come back and Texans voted again on the issue."

The proposal would allow one casino each in Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio with three additional casinos along the coast. Three racetracks in Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston could operate casinos, and nine small race tracks could apply for licenses to operate casinos or slot machines.

The three federally recognized American Indian tribes in Texas would also each have a casino license. The amendment would only allow two casinos per county and no more than three in a major metropolitan area.

The state would tax gambling revenue at 20 percent, unless the operator invested more than $1 billion, and then the rate would be 15 percent. At least 85 percent of tax revenue would go to reduce property taxes, the city and county would get 5 percent each, and the remaining 5 percent would be spent to prosecute gambling-related crime and help people with gambling addictions.

Supporters say their market research indicates Texas residents spend almost $3 billion in Oklahoma, Louisiana and New Mexico visiting casinos, and that the Chickasaw tribe has built the second largest casino complex in the nation just across the Red River to serve the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

They told the Senate Business and Commerce Committee on Wednesday that spending on convention centers and casinos could bring $8.5 billion in economic growth and 75,000 jobs to Texas.

Andy Abboud, representing the Las Vegas Sands Corp., said his company would invest in "integrated resorts" that generate revenue from conventions, dining and shopping in addition to gambling. He said the company's resorts dedicate less than 3 percent of total floor space to casinos, which serve as one of many amenities to convention goers.

"It's what they can do at the end of the day that makes a convention successful," said Abboud, who added that only 39 percent of his company's revenue in Las Vegas is from gambling. "Texas is one of the last great opportunities left in the world."

Most horse breeders have moved out of the state because Texas only offers $20 million in purses a year, while Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma offer $210 million, said Andrea Young, president of Sam Houston Race Park, a horse track in Houston.

"Texas tracks need casino gambling for one reason, in order to compete with tracks in adjacent states," she said.

But others said lawmakers should not be persuaded by the promise of new hotels and convention centers.

"You didn't hear one person talking about the games," said Rob Kohler, representing the Christian Life Commission, which opposes gambling.

Melinda Fredricks, vice chairwoman of the Republican Party of Texas, read from party platform, "We oppose the expansion of legalized gambling and encourage the repeal of the Texas State Lottery." She said any attempt to allow voters to decide the issue was "a veiled attempt to pass the buck."

The conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation issued a statement saying that the proposed limit on the number of casino licenses was anti-competitive and warned against the hidden social and legal costs of gambling.

Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr., D-Brownsville, also warned that while he supported the measure, he knew some Democrats would oppose the measure because of possible negative economic and social consequences.

Carona promised to work with all groups to craft a better version of the resolution. It needs a two-thirds majority in the Senate and House before it can go before voters.

Weight loss surgery not only shrinks waists but also affects genes

Apr. 11, 2013 ? Gastric bypass surgery can drastically reduce the body weight of obese individuals in a short timeframe. For reasons that are not entirely clear, the surgery also leads to early remission of type 2 diabetes in the vast majority of patients. Researchers report online April 11 in Cell Reports, published by Cell Press, the discovery of gene-expression alterations in individuals who underwent the surgery compared with obese individuals who did not.

"We provide evidence that in severely obese people, the levels of specific genes that control how fat is burned and stored in the body are changed to reflect poor metabolic health," says senior author Professor Juleen Zierath, of the Karolinska Institutet, in Stockholm, Sweden. "After surgery, the levels of these genes are restored to a healthy state, which mirrors weight loss and coincides with overall improvement in metabolism."

When the investigators probed deeper, they found that weight loss after surgery causes changes in DNA modifications that control gene expression in response to the environment. Specifically, changes in methylation, or chemical markings, on two genes that control glucose and fat metabolism (called PGC-1alpha and PDK4) correlate with obesity but are reversed after surgery-induced weight loss. The findings suggest that the environment -- in this case food intake or weight loss -- can affect gene expression through this mechanism.

"The novelty of our work originates with the finding that DNA methylation is altered by weight loss." says first author Romain Barr?s, of the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark.

The findings may be useful for the design of new drugs that mimic this weight-loss-associated control of gene regulation.

Malawian government harshly criticizes Madonna

BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) ? Malawi issued a scathing critique of pop diva Madonna on Wednesday, accusing her of exaggerating her contributions to the southern African country and unreasonably demanding special treatment during her tour there last week.

The pop star denied the accusations. Her spokesman suggested they were prompted by the recent removal of the president's sister as head of Madonna's humanitarian organization there.

The singer has a long history with the country, which she first visited in 2006. She adopted two children from Malawi and runs several projects there. She was granted VIP treatment during previous visits, including when she last jetted into the country on April 1. But Madonna apparently was surprised when she learned upon leaving Malawi that that was no longer the case, and that she and her travelling party would have to line up with ordinary passengers and be frisked by airport security.

"There was a directive that Miss Louise Ciccone, travelling on an American passport, and her children Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon, Rocco Ritchie, Mercy James, David Banda Ciccone Ritchie should use the ordinary passenger terminal on their way to their jet," said an aviation official who refused to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

A strongly worded statement by the president's office accused Madonna of trying to use her fame and money to press Malawi into giving her special treatment.

"Granted, Madonna is a famed international musician. But that does not impose an injunction of obligation on any government under whose territory Madonna finds herself, including Malawi, to give her state treatment. Such treatment, even if she deserved it, is discretionary not obligatory," the statement said.

The presidential statement also questioned Madonna's intentions behind her humanitarian efforts in Malawi, alleging that the singer "wants Malawi to be forever chained to the obligation of gratitude."

"Kindness, as far as its ordinary meaning is concerned, is free and anonymous. If it can't be free and silent, it is not kindness; it is something else. Blackmail is the closest it becomes," the statement said.

President Joyce Banda was reportedly angered by Madonna's claims that she has built 10 schools in Malawi, and questioned that statement in widely quoted remarks last week.

"Where are the 10 schools she has built? She is just building school blocks at already existing schools. In some cases she just renovated an already existing block. This is an insult to the people of Malawi. She can't be lying to the world at our expense," Banda said.

In a statement released by her spokesperson, Madonna said he was "saddened" that Banda "has chosen to release?lies about what we've accomplished, my intentions, how I personally conducted myself while visiting Malawi and other untruths. I have no intentions of being distracted by these ridiculous allegations."

"I came to Malawi seven years ago with honorable intentions," Madonna said in the statement. "I returned earlier this month to view the new schools we built.?I did not ever ask or demand special treatment at the airport or elsewhere during my visit. ?I will not be distracted or discouraged by other?people's political agendas.? I made a?promise to the children of Malawi and I am keeping that promise."

A spokesman for Madonna expressed surprise at the most recent criticism and called the claim that the singer had requested special treatment "nonsense."

"Obviously these attacks are influenced by the fact that the President's sister was removed as the head of Madonna's organization in Malawi due to concerns about mismanagement of $3.8 million," said Trevor Neilson, whose Global Philanthropy Group is managing Madonna's projects in Malawi.

"As the largest private philanthropist to Malawi we would think that the government would be pleased that she is giving her time and money to one of the poorest countries in the world," Neilson said.

The statement from the president's office dismissed the claim that Banda is angry because her younger sister, Anjimile Mtila-Oponyo, was fired as the CEO for Madonna's charity, Raising Malawi.

The presidential statement said Malawi has played host to other international stars like Chuck Norris, Bono, David James, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville "who have never demanded state attention or decorum despite their equally dazzling stature."

Despite the furor, Madonna seemed unfazed.

"My reasons for being here have never changed, I am here because I care deeply about the children of Malawi, that is my main priority," she said last week at the end of her trip.

Madonna traveled there with her two adopted Malawian children, David Banda and Mercy James, both 8, and her children Lourdes, 14, and Rocco, 12.

Tesla Announces "Revolutionary" Lease-To-Own Program For ...

Tesla's big announcement today is that you'll soon be able to lease-to-own cars like the Model S with help from a number of banks. And prices start at $1,199 a month, or $500 thanks to some creative reasoning.

Here are some details:

  • US Bank and Wells Fargo have agreed to provide 10% down financing for purchase of a Model S (on approved credit). -- The 10% down payment is covered or more than covered by US Federal and state tax credits ranging from $7,500 to $15,000. New Jersey, Washington and DC also have no sales tax for electric vehicles. These advantages are not available when leasing.
  • When considering the savings from using electricity instead of gasoline, depreciation benefits and other factors, the true net out of pocket cost to own a mid-range Model S drops to less than $500 per month. -- After 36 months, you have the right, but not the obligation to sell your Model S to Tesla for the same residual value percentage as the iconic Mercedes S Class, one of the finest premium sedans in the world, made by Daimler (also a Tesla partner and investor).
  • Not only is Tesla guaranteeing that resale value, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk is personally standing behind that guarantee to give customers absolute peace of mind about the value of the asset they are purchasing.

So it's not a new car, it isn't about the big sale, but it is pretty good.

With this move, Tesla will be able to get their cars into more hands with a financing program. The $500 price tag isn't a straight $500 though. The base cost is actually $1,199 for an 85kWH model, but the savings of gas prices, tax credits, depreciation, not replacing brake pads, costs of electricity, etc, actually make it worth $500, which is the net out of pocket. They're assuming a lot, like the price of gas and what exact model of the car you bought.

Tesla has a calculator up on its site to show your "effective savings." If you drive 37,000 miles a year and live in West Virginia, it's basically free! Based on how I drive my personal car, I'd shell out around $900 a month to have a Model S.

This is a 5.5 year loan and, after year three, you have the opportunity to bow out and Tesla will buy the car back from you at the residual value of the S-Class.

Mike Ballaban makes a good point about the depreciation of the S-Class, the benchmark for the Model S:

Doesn't the Mercedes S-class have some pretty horrible depreciation rates? Or am I missing something?

For a 2010 Mercedes S-Class (one that's 36 months old), with 80,000 miles on it, Kelley Blue Book gives a value of $44,266.

That's about a 50% depreciation rate. Is it too early to calculate the actual market rate depreciation on a Tesla Model S?

Still, it's a great opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Tesla Model S instead of being a rich eco-mogul that can plunk down $80k in cash all willy nilly.

Another GOP Senator Endorses Same-Sex Marriage

Many Americans have embraced frugality in recent years, but sometimes money-saving strategies backfire when taken to extremes. Manisha Thakor, author of "On My Own Two Feet: A Modern Girl's Guide to Personal Finance" and founder and CEO of Santa Fe-based investment advisory firm MoneyZen Wealth Management, says this can occur among Americans across all income levels. "It's a mindset that comes from a healthy desire to not live beyond your means, but it crosses the line when it cuts into joy," she says.

Tourism down after sex attacks in India

NEW DELHI (AP) ? The rape and murder of a young woman in New Delhi in December followed by two attacks on foreign female travelers has altered how tourists view India and led to a sharp fall in the numbers of foreign tourists, especially women, a study said.

In the three months since that attack, the number of foreigners travelling to India has dropped by 25 percent, according to the study by the New Delhi-based Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The number of women tourists has dropped by 35 percent, the study released late Sunday said.

The gang rape of the 23-year-old university student on a bus in the heart of the Indian capital shocked a country often inured to such sexual violence. It brought hundreds of thousands of angry citizens out in the streets to demand more safety for women and harsher laws to deter the perpetrators of such acts.

The study surveyed 1,200 tour operators from across the country who said that "concerns about the safety of female travelers" had impacted how foreign travelers viewed India.

Since the December gang rape there have been two widely publicized incidents where foreign female travelers have been attacked.

Last month a Swiss woman was gang raped in central India as she and her husband camped in a remote forest. In the second incident a young British woman says she was forced to jump out of the window of her hotel room to avoid a sexual attack in Agra, the city that is home to the Taj Mahal.

According to the study, the three incidents have hurt tourism and nearly 72 percent of the tour operators said cancelations of holiday bookings came mostly from women tourists, most of them from Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia.

The study said that travelers planning trips to India had instead opted for other Asian countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The winter months from November to March mark the peak tourist season in India.

According to India's Tourism Ministry, 6.6 million foreign tourists visited India in 2012, earning the country $17.74 billion in foreign exchange.
