Union boss stands over Nazi slur on AIB chief

SIPTU president Jack O?Connor at the Philip Ross ?pop up? art exhibition in McDevitt's old wool factory in Glenties after his address to the MacGill Summer School

THE head of the country's biggest trade union is standing by his comments comparing AIB chief executive David Duffy to the head of the Nazi propaganda machine.

'; document.write(s); return; } window.google_adnum = window.google_adnum || null; google_ad_client = "ca-pub-9024837700129787"; google_ad_output = "js"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_ad_channel = '9868211012,3764294476'; google_max_num_ads = '2'; google_skip = window.google_adnum; /* insert this snippet for each ad call */

SIPTU president Jack O'Connor made the controversial link between Mr Duffy and Joseph Goebbels, who was Hitler's minister of propaganda. "If Goebbels had that man (David Duffy), Hitler would have won the war," Mr O'Connor claimed.

He made the comments after Mr Duffy had claimed that one in five homeowners in arrears was "strategically defaulting". The bitterness is set to intensify as one of the Central Bank's most senior figures warned of a "turbulent" few months ahead as the banks increase the number of home repossessions.

Fiona Muldoon, head of banking supervision at the Central Bank, also said lenders had to watch out for people

who may be "trying it on" in seeking debt deals. She said the Central Bank had set "ambitious" targets for the banks to deal with troubled homeowners in order to "force the issue".

Ms Muldoon added that it was "inevitable" there would be some reaction and repercussions from home repossessions.

The heads of the other main banks weighed into the debate. Ulster Bank chief executive Jim Brown backed Mr Duffy's view on "strategic defaults" but Bank of Ireland's Richie Boucher voiced his doubt that large numbers of people in arrears were "cynically" defaulting in the hope of securing a debt deal.

However, it was Mr O'Connor's linking of the head of a state-owned bank and the Nazi Party that really caused shockwaves. The SIPTU chief was speaking at the MacGill Summer School in Glenties, Co Donegal.

Mr O'Connor said he had heard the AIB boss speaking on the radio this week regarding the bank's first-half results.

Last night he told the Irish Independent that he stood by his comparison with Goebbels but distanced himself from suggesting any links with fascism.

"I'm not in any way suggesting that David Duffy is in any way remotely aligned with Nazism," said Mr O'Connor.

"If the man was offended or if he interpreted it in any way other than the way I meant it, I don't wish to imply anything other than what I meant."

He stressed that he was deeply concerned that the level of evictions looked set to rise.

"We all as a society have an obligation to support those at risk of losing their family home," said Mr O'Connor. And he accused AIB of trying to stigmatise people who genuinely could not make ends meet.

A spokeswoman for Mr Duffy said he would not be responding to Mr O'Connor's comments.

The controversy erupted after Mr Duffy had claimed that as many as one in five homeowners in deep debt arrears was a so-called "strategic defaulter" ? meaning they earn enough to repay their home loan but are using it to cover other expenses, such as credit card debt.

His bank said it had sent letters to thousands of defaulting borrowers threatening legal action, including repossession.

And Ulster Bank chief executive Jim Brown told the Irish Independent that he "shares a similar view" to Mr Duffy about the level of so-called strategic default and that his bank was also planning an "uptick in legal activity".

However Bank of Ireland's chief executive Richie Boucher said it was impossible to know the level of strategic versus more genuine defaulters.

"It's not possible to break it down scientifically," Mr Boucher said. "Is it (a case of default) absolutely deliberate? I can't sit here in my bunker and put myself in someone else's mind."

Together Alone: Computers, Technology & Kids | Psych Central

Together Alone: Computers, Technology & KidsWhat?s happening in the ad world these days? One TV ad running in my area is of a mother who, the narrator chirps, is a master multitasker. She is on a cell phone while making her kids breakfast and sending them off for the day. She?s on the cell phone while doing the grocery shopping with her kids.

She doesn?t even take that phone off her ear when going through the checkout line. Yes, she?s smiling all the time but how is it that whoever is on the other end of that phone is more important than relating to her children and the people in front of her?

Another ad: A woman tells us she is in charge of the family finances and she is so, so happy that she?s found a bundle of cable services that is faster than her old company. We follow her through the house as she indicates her daughter in her room on a computer, her husband in the living room on his laptop and her son in the family room on his tablet. Everyone is happy to have speedy Internet. Everyone is in a different room.

Together alone. Are the ads reflecting American life or are they showing us what we should accept as ?normal?? The people who make the ads know what sells. What they seem to be selling these days is the idea that it is normative for family members to be more interested in their electronics than each other. They may even be right.

According to a recent study from the Kaiser Family Foundation, kids between the ages of 8 to 18 are now spending more than seven and a half hours a day on devices with screens (computers, TVs, and other electronics.) That doesn?t count time spent texting or talking on cell phones. Meanwhile, research shows that American working parents spend an average of 19 minutes a day of quality time with their children! A study by the U.S. Department of Education found that mothers spend less than 30 minutes a day talking with their children while other polls show that fathers spend an average of 15 minutes per day.

Do the math! Who, or rather what, is spending the most time with our children?

Yes, I know. Computers are a fact of life. A kid who grows up in a home without one is at a decided disadvantage. More and more teachers assume the kids have one available and create assignments that require the ability to search the Internet for information. Social inclusion seems to require it. Cell phones provide a measure of safety for kids who are home alone or who are traveling from place to place.

But there?s a dark side. The time with computers can slide from use to abuse so gradually that we barely notice. That?s why the multitasker mom in the TV ad is so disturbing. She probably isn?t aware of how that little box on her ear has separated her from her children and her community. She thinks she can both be on the phone and in life. As happy as she seems to be, she?s missing interactions that are important to her children?s development and to her relationship with them. She?s missing the opportunity to give her kids a warm send-off in the morning. She isn?t teaching her kids about nutrition, budgeting, and courtesy at the grocery store. The message she is giving them is that they are along for her ride, not important in their own right.

As connected as everyone seems to be with the social world, it takes some effort to make genuine connections within the family. Kids need the nurturing that only another human being can provide. They need role models from life, not from TV, about how to be an adult, how to be in loving relationship with a partner, and how to parent their children. They need more protection than ?nannyware? can provide from material that is too mature or too stimulating for them to handle. They need to learn how to get information from people as well as from Google. They need parents to monitor their progress and school and to teach them to value schooling. They need gentle teaching by loving parents about what is important culturally and spiritually.

The mom who happily takes us through her perfect house, finding her perfectly happy family members in separate corners, should be concerned. Is her tour just a moment in time, or is it a reflection of the general state of relationships in her family? If it is the latter, she and her husband have some talking to do about how to fix their lack of connection with their kids.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has weighed in on the subject. They recommend that parents establish ?screen-free? zones in our homes. That means no TVs or computers in kids? bedrooms and limiting entertainment time on computers to two hours a day or less. Further, they stress the importance of monitoring what our kids are watching (and playing if in online gaming) for quality.

It almost doesn?t matter what adults do with kids as long as there is an opportunity to talk, to have affectionate physical contact and to pass on information, values, and beliefs. Having a game of catch outside, chatting while making dinner together or washing the car or snuggling up on the couch to read stories all provide the one-on-one, adult-to-kid time that gives our kids things no screen, no matter what the app, can.

Mexico?s on-the-road diplomacy in this Washington

The Hispanic population of Washington ? 82 percent with origins in Mexico ? has nearly doubled in the past decade to more than 750,000, and is spread across the state, growing in northwest Washington but also centered in places like Walla Walla and Columbia Counties in Southeast Washington.

As a result, the Mexican consul-general?s office in Seattle has resorted to a form of on-the-road diplomacy.

Two vans take off one weekend each month for a distant destination, say Kennewick or Walla Walla, carrying a six-member team headed by a foreign service officer.? They set up shop on Friday night, for six hours Saturday and again Sunday offer passport services, consular ID papers, powers of attorney, register children of Mexican parents, and extend notary services.

?We take the office with us,? jokes Eduardo Baca Cuenca, Mexico?s newly arrived consul-general in Seattle.? Hundreds of people use the consul-general?s services, making appointments in advance or just showing up.

A weekday visit to the usually crowded consul-general?s office in Belltown underscores that there is lots of demand for the services of a distant government.

A consul-general?s job is often to ?show the flag,? promote trade and raise a country?s profile.? Canada has employed such high-profile figures as ex-Prime Minister Kim Campbell, who did a stint in Low Angeles, and former member of parliament and junior cabinet minister Roger Simmons in Seattle.

But Baca Cuenca?s job is a little different.

?Our first job is attention to our local community, and we have a very big community,? he said.? ?No other consulate has the volume of work that we do.?

The Hispanic population of Washington was just over 200,000 in 1990.? It more than doubled to over 450,000 in 2000, and leaped to more than 750,000 in the 2010 census.? Hispanic residents, documented and undocumented, make up a majority of the populations in Franklin and Adams Counties, and between 25 and 50 percent through much of Central Washington.

The North American Free Trade Agreement has also boosted trade between Mexico and Washington State to more than $3 billion a year.? For instance, Mexico is buying lots of Washington apples, many picked by migrants from Mexico. But, as Baca Cuenca notes, not many people are aware of the two-way economic connection.

Given the attention he must pay to ?our local community? ? the Seattle consul-general?s responsibilities extend into northern Idaho ? Baca Cuenca is hoping to get a separate Mexican trade office established in Seattle.? ?You cannot attend to this part-time,? he said.

By 2025, Washington is expected to have nearly one million Hispanic residents.

Giant mushroom found in China (+video)

Giant mushroom: This fungus has not yet been identified. But it's not big enough to dislodge Oregon's giant honey mushroom as the largest in the world.

By Marc Lallanilla,?LiveScience / July 30, 2013

China's Yunnan province is known as the "Kingdom of Mushrooms" for its rich diversity of more than 600 species of edible fungi.

But even the hungriest of mushroom fans might find this monster mushroom, recently discovered in Yunnan, a little hard to swallow.

The mushroom, a species that has yet to be identified, measures 37 inches (93 centimeters) across the top and weighs about 33 pounds (15 kilograms), according to Science World Report. [Magnificent Microphotography: 50 Tiny Wonders]

Fungi, including mushrooms, are neither plants nor animals and instead form their own group of living organisms that generally reproduce by spores and contain nuclei with chromosomes. Perhaps surprisingly due to their plantlike appearance, fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants.

China's mushroom industry is a multimillion-dollar operation, with sales equivalent to $44 million in 2005, according to The Diplomat. And some of the finest and costliest specimens, such as the rare Tricholoma matsutake mushroom ? highly prized as a delicacy in Japan ? come from Yunnan.

The giant mushroom discovered in China might not be safe to eat; many mushrooms are poisonous. Two women in California were killed recently after eating a soup made of toxic mushrooms.

On the other hand, there may be some therapeutic benefits to certain mushrooms. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University believe the hallucinogen found in "magic mushrooms" might someday help treat a variety of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety and addiction.

It remains to be seen whether the massive 'shroom discovered in China is a record-breaking fungus for its species, but it certainly won't be the world's largest mushroom: In 1998, a giant honey mushroom (Armillaria ostoyae) was discovered growing underground in Oregon. The specimen is estimated to be some 2,384 acres (965 hectares) in size, and at least 2,400 years old.

Accenture in talks to acquire rival Booz & Co: WSJ

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Management consulting firm Accenture Plc is in talks to acquire rival Booz & Co, a deal that would beef up its strategy and operations consulting services, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Acquisition-hungry Accenture has this year announced it would be acquiring London-based global service design consultancy Fjord and digital marketing company Acquity Group as well as Mortgage Cadence, a loan origination software company.

Representatives for Accenture were not available for comment after normal business hours. A spokeswoman for Booz & Co said the firm does not address market or media speculation pertaining to it.

Accenture has about 266,000 employees worldwide and net revenues of $27.9 billion for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2012, the company's website said.

Booz & Co has over 3,000 employees globally, according to information on the company's website. It ended discussions of a possible merger with A.T. Kearney, another management consulting firm, in July 2010.

Accenture cut its full-year outlook last month, citing a pullback in spending by its consulting business clients, after reporting third-quarter revenue below analysts' estimates.

Apple patent reveals three-lens, three-sensor iPhone camera

Back of iPhone

NBC News file

The back of the iPhone 5.

Your point-and-shoot is living on borrowed time. Recently released devices such as the Nokia Lumia 1020 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom have some of the most powerful cameras of any smartphone, and Apple may be planning their own optic innovation for future iPhones. According to a patent granted by the USPTO Tuesday, the California-based manufacturer secured the right to create a triple-lens, triple-sensor image capture device that would allow for unprecedented color quality.

The patent's abstract states that the technology will utilize one image sensor for luminance and two for chrominance. Each of these sensors will have an accompanying lens assembly that will help direct incoming light. This combination of sensors and lenses has the potential to eliminate "blind" spots in photos, since the chrominance and luminance sensors can create a composite image that would fill in color information that might normally be lost due to near field objects.

Apple isn't likely to implement this new technology into the iPhone anytime soon, but it could become a major selling point for its smartphones in the future. This patent arrives on the heels of a variety of rumors regarding the future of the iPhone's camera, as the next iPhone could potentially launch with a 12MP lens.

With Nokia, HTC and Samsung consistently improving the power of their smartphone cameras, the iPhone faces some steep competition. Apple enthusiasts will have to wait until September to see if the iPhone will once again bring innovation to the realm of phone photography.

Perseid meteor shower: Coming soon to a sky near you

Perseid meteor shower: Beloved by skywatchers, 2013 will be an excellent one for the Perseid meteor shower. The moon will set before midnight on the peak Perseids nights.

For Northern Hemisphere observers, the latter half of July on into August is usually regarded as "meteor viewing season," with one of the best displays of the year reaching its peak in mid-August.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is beloved by everyone from meteor enthusiasts to summer campers, and 2013 will be an excellent one for the Perseids. The moon will set before midnight on the peak nights of Aug. 11 and 12, meaning dark skies for prospective observers. [See Amazing Perseid Meteor Shower Photos of 2012]

This week, however, let's concentrate on some of the lesser-known summer meteor displays.?

In general, Earth encounters richer meteoric activity during the second half of the year, and stargazers are more likely to see twice as many meteors per hour in the predawn hours as compared with the evening hours. During the premidnight hours, the United States is on the "trailing" side of the Earth due to our orbital motion through space. Any meteoric particle generally must have an orbital velocity greater than that of the Earth to "catch" the planet.

After midnight, when the United States is ?turned onto the Earth's "leading" side, any particle that lies along the Earth's orbital path will enter the planet's atmosphere as a meteor.? As such, objects collide with the atmosphere at speeds of 7 to 45 miles per second (11 to 17.7 kilometers per second), their energy of motion rapidly dissipates in the form of heat, light, and ionization, creating short-lived streaks of light popularly referred to as "shooting stars."

Summertime meteors, occasionally flitting across your line of sight, are especially noticeable between mid-July and the third week of August. Between Aug. 3 and 15, there are no fewer than six different active minor displays. These six meteor showers are listed in the table below.

The actual number of meteors a single observer can see in an hour depends strongly on sky conditions, but the only equipment you'll need to see them are your eyes and a modest amount of patience.

The rates given in the table are based on a limited star magnitude of +6.5 (considered to be the faintest star visible to the naked eye without the use of binoculars or a telescope), an experienced observer, and an assumption that the radiant is directly overhead.

The radiant is the place in the sky where the paths of meteors, if extended backward, would intersect when plotted on a star chart.? Your clenched fist held at arm's length is equal to roughly 10 degrees on the sky.? So if the radiant is 30 degrees ("three-fists") above the horizon, the hourly rate is halved; at 15 degrees, it is one-third.

While the hourly rates from these other meteor streams provide but a fraction of the numbers produced by the Perseids, combined, overall they provide a wide variety of meteors of differing colors, speeds and trajectories.?

Asda Stores No Longer Stocking New Wii U Systems or Games - Wii ...

No Wii U systems here

No Wii U systems here

Limited stock via Asda Direct

Update:

Following the emergence of this story around various outlets, Asda has contacted MCV to state that Wii U consoles have only ever been available in around 100 stores, rather than all 555 around the UK. Wii U systems will apparently continue to play a part on Asda Direct ? the online store ? with limited availability currently the result of the reduced hardware going out of stock. The absence of 3DS hardware on Asda Direct is said to be a result of price promotions also selling out stock, with the chain stating that it's increasing support for the handheld. It's also reiterated that Wii U hardware can be picked up in store if ordered using Asda Direct's Click & Collect service.

As outlined in the original article below, the Asda Direct website doesn't currently demonstrate much support for Nintendo systems, with just eight Wii U products currently available.

Original article:

Earlier today we reported the happy news of Pikmin 3 making its UK chart debut at number two, as well as the continuing good performance of key 3DS games. However, some particularly bad news for the system's fortunes and publicity in the UK has arrived with confirmation that Asda, a major supermarket chain with over 550 stores, has stopped stocking new Wii U products, while Asda Direct ? its online store ? appears to be running down older products.

This applies to hardware, new games ? including Pikmin 3 ? and accessories, which aren't being included in stores, with the company saying the following to CVG in relation to products via the online-only Asda Direct.

Asda continues to offer customers a selection of Wii U games and accessories through Asda Direct, but these ranges are currently not on offer in Asda shops.

...Asda will stock [Wii U] games on a title by title merit basis as they come along through Asda Direct. We will continue to support Nintendo as a format holder partner.

Despite the "title by title merit basis", Pikmin 3 isn't available on Asda Direct at the time of writing.

The poor performance of the Wii U in 2013 may explain reluctance from some retailers, but this Asda stance is surprising in light of Nintendo aggressive release schedule designed to revive the system in the second half of the year. Retailer concerns were particularly prominent earlier in the year, with Nintendo being moved to state that it would meet with retail partners to share strategies and outline the system's prospects in order to secure further support.

What seems peculiar about this Asda scenario isn't its loss of confidence, as low sales naturally drive stock decisions, but the continuing presence of hundreds of older products for other systems and hardware sales of the struggling PS Vita. At the time of writing there are also no 3DS systems for sale on Asda Direct, which is extraordinary considering its current software performance and it being the best selling hardware in the UK in recent weeks. Nintendo, for its part, has issued the following statement.

Nintendo UK does not comment on specific business practices with individual retailers. However, as we have seen with Nintendo 3DS, software sells hardware, and with titles such as Wonderful 101, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World already announced for this year as well as the recently released Pikmin 3 and New Super Luigi U having reached number 2 and number 6 in this week's chart respectively, we are looking forward to the year ahead on Wii U.

Asda was one retailer to aggressively slash the price of the Wii U hardware earlier in the year, and fears that it'd be unwilling to refill stock have been realised. Perhaps the situation will be resolved in the coming months, but an absence and lack of presence in such a prominent, recognisable supermarket brand is a blow to the Wii U in the UK. Ongoing retail partnerships ? such as eShop cards at GAME and so on ? seem increasingly important.

Could it be essential that I select a buyer?s or seller?s agent instead of an ?all-purpose? agent? All these factors yet others is going to be influential inside your property experience. In Arizona, as with most states, anyone selling property will need to take a test to become licensed. Therefore, the person should have a fundamental knowledge of property practice and laws and regulations. buyer resources Wade L KovacicThis really is all a realtor does. A real estate agent in Tucson Arizona or perhaps in every other part of the condition takes it a couple of steps further. They have to still update their understanding and education and in addition they become people of the professional Real estate agent organization like the National Association of Real estate agents. If you take these extra steps, they have the MLS (Mls) to locate qualities in addition to sell them. 2UP Gaming To Spend $330m to Enter New Jersey Online Market ...

July 25, 2013

2up-gaming-new-jersey-casinoUK-registered, Curacao-licensed online gambling operator 2UP Gaming PLC is looking to break into New Jersey?s online gambling market by either acquiring or building a casino in Atlantic City. On Thursday, 2UP released a statement saying it had received a letter of intent from an unspecified ?Asian investment group? pledging to invest up to $330m in order to facilitate the acquisition of an existing Atlantic City gaming joint.

2UP, which began life in Melbourne, Australia a few years back, stated that it and its unnamed Asian sugar daddy planned to finalize their Definitive Agreement by Sept. 9, 2013. NorthJersey.com?s John Brennan quoted the company stating it was also considering the construction of a brand new facility in Atlantic City, but that language doesn?t appear in the press release on 2UP?s site, suggesting saner heads have since intervened.

2UP CEO Marino Sussich stated that his company had been ?working diligently for the past 12 months assembling the finest technology and strategy and necessary to be a global leader in the iGaming marketplace.? Sussich touted emerging markets as key to 2UP?s growth potential, and that the ?soon to be released launch of 2UP?s online gaming products into the United States? would factor large in this strategy.

Vincent Crandon, managing director of New York-based project finance outfit MidOil USA, was responsible for structuring the transaction between 2UP and its Asian partner. Crandon said MidOil, which will oversee 2UP?s New Jersey expansion, had ?assembled an amazing team of local New Jersey professionals who are looking forward to helping revitalize Atlantic City by creating new jobs and opportunity.?

2UP first revealed their New Jersey aspirations in January, as part of the presser the company issued to announce its ?25m acquisition of the DBG Poker Group. At the time, Crandon announced 2UP was looking at a ?real world hotel/casino acquisition? in Atlantic City.

2UP needs some connection to an AC casino in order to participate in New Jersey?s online market, but the notion that 2UP might consider building a new casino from scratch seems spectacularly unlikely, given Atlantic City?s uninterrupted six-year revenue death spiral and the fact that Revel, the last casino built in AC, filed for bankruptcy within a year of opening its doors. Despite Gov. Chris Christie?s boosterism, it?s unlikely that New Jersey regulators would even consider further diluting AC?s casino market via the addition of yet another brick-and-mortar gaming option.

That leaves acquisition, and there are currently only two AC casinos that have yet to announce partnerships with online gambling companies: the Atlantic Club Casino-Hotel and Revel. 2UP?s $330m bankroll won?t be nearly enough to cover Revel?s significant debt burden, making the Atlantic Club the far more likely acquisition target.

2UP?s next annual general meeting is scheduled for Aug. 9 in London, which may provide an opportunity to shed further light on its stateside plans, as well as the identity of its mystery Asian backer. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has established a July 29 deadline for would-be online gambling service providers to file license applications if they wish to make the mid-November ?go-live? target for the state?s online market, so 2UP really has no time to lose.

You Can Thank Your Pet Cat, Dog For Five Science Innovations ...

(SCIENCE) While it?s easy to note the emotional impact pets have on humans, these animal companions have also influenced the science world on many occasions, being the inspiration behind numerous modern marvels and scientific breakthroughs.?Read on to unveil how dogs and cats have provided creative inspiration for some of the most recognizable products in our society, such as Velcro and road reflectors. ? Global Animal

GOOD, Alessandra Rizzotti

What if you could create better design by studying how nature solves problems? Through the science of biomimicry, researchers have been doing just that. Looking to nature to inspire innovative solutions to human problems, scientists have found fascinating ways to rethink the man-made world, sometimes just based on how an animal?s eyes or legs move. These five ideas below demonstrate how the presence of dogs and cats have helped designers and scientists make significant breakthroughs and contributions to society.

Velcro: Inspired by Burrs and a Dog?s Coat

In 1941, Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral noticed a burdock burr had naturally caught onto his dog?s coat while they were walking in the Alps. In 1955, Mestral patented a synthetic version of the tiny seed whose hundreds of hooks had stuck onto microscopic loops in the fur. The innovation of?Velcro?became a sensation in the 1960s, when NASA?s astronauts used it to keep objects from floating away in spaceships. Now, Velcro is an everyday problem solver used in blood pressure gauges, athletic equipment, clothing, garden ties, as well as wall- and car- mounts for GPS equipment. And it?s not just used for practicalities. You can even have fun with it by jumping onto a Velcro wall.

A Safer Thumbtack: Inspired by Cats? Claws

Push pins?have been around since the 1900s, helping innovators and writers post ideas to thought boards, but there?s always that risk of poking yourself with the sharp end. Designer?Toshi Fukaya?s?biomimetic design of a newer, sleeker, and safer thumbtack was inspired by the way a cat exposes and withdraws its claws. Covered by a pill-shaped silicone sheath, the pin is not exposed until it?s pressed onto a hard surface like a corkboard or wall. Fukaya?s pin won a 2011?Red Dot Design Concept Award, giving cats a claw up in the world of biomimicry.

Better Robotics: Inspired by a Three-Legged Dog

When animals lose limbs, they find new ways to walk. When Martin Grob noticed that his brother?s?three-legged dog?moved faster than some four-legged dogs he observed, he was inspired to include three-legged dogs in the?LocoMorph Project, which aims to study the movement of animals and humans in order to help build more efficient and mobile robots. By putting the dogs on a treadmill and capturing their movements with 10 high-speed infrared cameras, his team saw that if a dog lacked a fore limb, it had more difficulty moving than a dog that lacked a hind limb. In fact, if a dog lacked a hind limb, its fore limbs continued to function normally because of the distribution of its body weight. This ongoing?study?will potentially allow scientists to create robots that could voluntarily adapt their movements to unexpected situations or difficult environments, like the surface of Mars.

Bedbug Detectors: Inspired by a Dog?s Nose

Because dogs have a keen sense of smell, exterminators often train them to detect bedbugs, which give off high levels of carbon dioxide and very specific pheromones with specific odors. Although termite inspector?Bill Moyer?has filed a patent on a bedbug detector that can detect carbon dioxide levels, it was mainly designed for pest control companies. Now innovators are attempting to make more affordable options that can be used by homeowners, inspired by the dog?s nose. In the meantime, you can hire bedbug detecting services that use dogs, like?Bed Bug Dog Roscoe.

Road Reflectors: Inspired by Cat Eyes

With ever-increasing traffic, road reflectors do a good job of keeping us safe on the road, and we can thank cats for that. In the 1930s, inventive Yorkshire repairman Percy Shaw had gotten on his motorcycle on a foggy night after spending the day asphalting a street. Unable to see the road well, he had almost plummeted over the edge of a twisting road, but the reflection of his headlight in a cat?s eyes stopped him. In 1935, Shaw developed the??Catseye? reflecting roadstud?and founded?Reflecting Roadstuds Ltd.?However, his invention wasn?t widely adopted in the United Kingdom until a blackout during World War II, about 10 years later. Now, Shaw?s invention has been modified and used on roads across the world.

Health Benefits of Meditation in Daily Life | MeMetics

The pressures of daily life cause a lot of stress, especially for people who have to balance a job along with a family. With the extra demands that these place on one?s time, as well as the energy that is required for dealing with all the tasks that need to be completed, the end of each day normally sees us stressed out and tired.

This is an area of great concern, since too much pressure can lead to depression, lack of energy and lower immunity. This makes us more vulnerable to diseases and disorders, along with affecting the way we look and feel all the time. The question remains, how do we deal with all the demands on our time and energy without losing our health?

Many experts suggest using meditation and deep breathing exercises to calm our minds and release stress. Yoga, which combines the two, is becoming a very popular option since many people see the benefits of this routine.

Deep breathing and meditation have been gaining immense popularity, especially in the last decade, as a means of countering the ill-effects of stress and busy lifestyles. The beneficial results have been noticed to affect not only mental health, but physical fitness and health too!

Let?s take a look at some of the major benefits that even a few minutes of meditation can have on your all-round health:

  • Relaxation ? This is the number one reason that most people turn to meditation and deep breathing. If you include even 10-15 minutes of deep breathing in your everyday routine, you will be able to feel your muscles relaxing and feel refreshed as a result.
  • Improved Energy ? The effects of meditation on your physical energy are tremendous, since it leaves you refreshed and energized. Studies show that this also has a positive effect on immunity and physical fitness, especially with blood pressure and heart health.
  • Clear Mind ? With a bit of practice, these techniques can help you clear your mind of all the stress and disturbance that you feel. This helps your mind feel fresh and improves your mood, so that you can deal with tasks more effectively.
  • Concentration ? Meditation has shown that it can improve concentration and learning abilities in people of all ages. You will be able to focus on important details rather than being distracted by little things.
  • Deeper Sleep ? We all know that a good night?s rest is essential for good health and meditation can help with insomnia or troubled sleep. Since it creates a sense of calm, even deep breathing before sleep will help you achieve deep and restful sleep every night.

Meditation has been the most preferred form of achieving mental calm and peace for centuries, so it?s only obvious that it would be revived for the modern day. While it was considered a fad when it was reintroduced a few decades back, people started seeing the results when they tried it and it is now being accepted as the simplest answer to stress!

Service cuts were on the minds of voters during a debate between nine Ottawa South candidates as hundreds of residents crammed into the Canterbury Community Centre Wednesday night.

?I watched the healthcare system demoralize? under the Mike Harris government, said resident Pam Robin.

But Progressive Conservative candidate Matt Young said the Tories will ?prioritize the programs that matter to people.?

That will result in slashing programs in hospitals such as CHEO and firing doctors, teachers, and the like, Liberal John Fraser retorted.

PC leader Tim Hudak is ?going to bring us back to 1995,? Fraser said, adding he?s seen that movie before.

New Democrat Bronwyn Funiciello said the NDP will ?protect public services. It is of the utmost importance to do so.?

Financial restraint is another major issue for voters.

?I don?t like the overspending of McGuinty?s Liberals. I think they should consider it to be ?our money? rather than their own money,? said Terry Hay, an Ottawa South resident for 25 years.

Green Party candidate Taylor Howarth addressed the province?s mounting debt.

?This is the burden that we?re going to be carrying for the rest of our lives,? said Howarth.

Despite having nine candidates, ?I don?t feel there?s a lot of choice,? said Peggy Winstan.

?I can pretty much eliminate probably seven or eight of the nine.?

Advance polls run until Friday and byelection day is Aug. 1.

Five out of 107 seats in the Ontario legislature are currently vacant.

The Liberals hold 48 seats, the Progressive Conservatives snagged 36 seats while the New Democrats hold 18 seats.

Array asthma drug meets main goal in mid-stage study

(Reuters) - Array Biopharma Inc said one of its drugs met the main goal of improving lung function in a mid-stage study among patients with mild to moderate persistent allergic asthma.

Array shares rose as much as 19 percent to $6.64 ? their highest in nearly five years ? on Tuesday morning.

Array said it was seeking a partner to develop the drug and Chief Executive Ron Squarer said there was substantial interest from key players in the field.

"In theory, with a partner we may look at higher doses of the drug. With the safety profile, there may be the potential to combine this drug with existing therapies," he said on a conference call with analysts.

Array, which develops drugs to treat cancer, diabetes and hepatitis C, has partnered with companies including AstraZeneca Plc, Amgen Inc and Eli Lilly and Co.

William Blair analyst John Sonnier said the study data looked comparable to a commonly used oral drug called Singulair.

Merck & Co Inc's Singulair generated more than $6 billion in annual sales before its cheaper generic versions became available in the United States last August.

Array said the mechanism of its drug, codenamed ARRY 502, had a potential role in allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis and the drug could be applied to the treatment of multiple diseases.

ARRY 502 inhibits a molecule that plays a part in increasing allergic inflammation.

The drug showed an improvement of 3.9 percent in pre-bronchodilator Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), compared with a placebo.

FEV1 is the maximal amount of air that can be forcefully exhaled in one second and a measures of lung function.

The drug was well tolerated with fewer adverse events compared with the placebo.

The trial, which enrolled 184 patients in the Unites States, tested 200 mg of the drug dosed twice daily.

Asthma affects about 25 million people in the United States, and about 235 to 300 million worldwide, Array said.

Array shares were up nearly 12 percent at $6.23 in mid-morning trade on the Nasdaq.

Dozens of New Oil Rigs Planned for Gulf of Mexico

By?John Upton?/ Grist An oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico

It?s open season for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

A?five-month moratorium?on deep-sea drilling was imposed after the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon disaster, but those days are long gone. Now a record-breaking number of rigs are coming to the Gulf to tap gas and oil beneath the sea floor.

More than 60 rigs are expected to be operating in waters deeper than 1,000 feet by the end of 2015, up from 36 today,?Bloomberg reports:

Demand is driven in part by exploration successes in the lower tertiary, a geologic layer about 20,000 feet below the sea floor containing giant crude deposits that producers are only now figuring out how to tap. Companies such as Chevron Corp. and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. must do more drilling to turn large discoveries into producing wells ? as many as 20 wells for each find.

?The Gulf had more than its fair share of discoveries,? Chris Beckett, chief executive officer at Pacific Drilling SA, said in an interview. ?Right now, the Gulf is the fastest growing deep-water region in the world.?

The revival will add to surging crude oil supplies from the U.S. shale boom, with Gulf production climbing 23 percent to 1.55 million barrels a day by December 2014 from 1.26 million in March, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

EU move makes clear Hezbollah a 'terror' group: Israel

JERUSALEM: Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni praised the EU decision Monday to blacklist Hezbollah's armed wing, which she said made clear that the Lebanese group is a "terrorist organisation".

"I welcome this announcement by the EU, that Hezbollah is now included in the list of terrorist organisations," said Livni.

"Finally, after years of deliberations, the claim that Hezbollah is a legitimate political party has rightfully failed. Now it is clear to the entire world that Hezbollah is a terrorist organisation", she said in a statement.

Trayvon Martin's parents speak to crowds as rallies are held across the U.S. demanding justice for dead Florida teenager

  • Day of action calls for civil liberty charges to be made against Zimmerman

One week after George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the death of teenager Trayvon Martin, people have started to gather for nationwide rallies to press for federal civil rights charges against the former neighborhood watch leader.

Beyonce and Jay Z joined the Florida teenager's mother as she spoke to crowds in Manhattan alongside the Reverend Al Sharpton.

The case has become a flashpoint in separate but converging national debates over self-defense laws, guns, and race relations.?

The Rev Al Sharpton's National Action Network organized Justice for Trayvon rallies and vigils outside federal buildings from noon in at least 101 cities, from New York and Los Angeles to Wichita in Kansas and Birmingham, Alabama.

On Saturday morning he told supporters in Manhattan he wanted a rollback of stand-your-ground self-defense laws.

'We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again,' he said.

?

'We have the strength to wipe our tears away. Last Saturday we cried. This Saturday we march.'

Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, also spoke at the New York rally, telling the crowd: 'Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours.'

She added: 'Of course we are hurting. Of course we are shocked and disappointed, but that just means we have to roll up our sleeves and continue to fight.'

Ms Fulton, her son Jahvaris, and the Rev Al Sharpton joined the rally as it marched to One Police Plaza at noon, where they were joined by Jay Z and his wife Beyonce, according to the New York Post.

Although they did not speak at the rally, the Rev Al Sharpton told the crowd: 'Jay Z told me, "I'm a father. Beyonce is a mother". We all feel the pain and apprehension - the laws must protect everybody, or it doesn't protect anybody.'

He added: 'We do not come from hate, we come from love of children,' according to the Huffington Post.

Beyonce had shown her support for the case last week, asking for a moment of silence at a concert after the not guilty verdict was recorded.

While Trayvon's mother was in New York, the dead teenager's father took part in a Miami rally on Saturday morning, according to?NBC News.

Tracy Martin told supporters outside Miami's federal courthouse: 'I vowed to Trayvon, when he was lying in his casket, that I would use every ounce of energy in my body to seek justice for him.'

He added: 'I will fight for Trayvon until the day I die. Not only will I fight for Trayvon, I will fight for your child as well.'

The Rev Sharpton and other supporters want the Justice Department to pursue federal civil rights charges against Mr Zimmerman.

He told the rally on Saturday: 'They will not say that was the young man killed in Sanford. They will say that was the young man who helped change the laws in the United States of America.'

Former Governor Eliot Spitzer, who attended the New York rally, said: 'Regardless of how you view the legality of the verdict in isolation, justice here was denied. An innocent young man was shot and killed and that is a tragedy.'

Attorney General Eric Holder announced this week that the department would investigate whether the Hispanic neighborhood watch man could be charged under those federal civil rights laws, which would require evidence that he harbored racial animosity against Trayvon.

Most legal experts said it would be a difficult charge to bring.

Mr Holder added that the shooting demonstrated the need to re-examine stand-your-ground laws nationwide.

'?The verdict freed George Zimmerman, but it condemned America more,' the pastor who is a member of the board of directors of the National Action Network, said.

On Friday President Obama said it was still common for black men to ?'be followed in a department store' while shopping or to walk down the street and 'hear the car doors lock'.

Administrators doing their jobs for schools

We would like to correct the assumptions made by the writer of the letter ?CPS rehiring staff who weren?t needed before? (July 14).

The 72 Cincinnati Public Schools? administrative employees who were notified in March, for budgetary reasons, that their contracts would not be renewed have continued to work and do their jobs for the past four months. These employees? contracts were scheduled to expire July 31. The superintendent, the CPS Board of Education and CPS staff used those four months to create a balanced budget that allowed CPS to keep most of the nonrenewed administrators. Their contracts were renewed at the July 8 board meeting.

San Diego County Sues to Revive California's Gay-Marriage Ban

San Diego County Clerk Ernest Dronenburg sued to block a state directive ordering him to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, saying California?s Proposition 8 marriage ban is still valid.

Governor Jerry Brown and Attorney General Kamala Harris, both Democrats, don?t have supervisory control over county clerks and a San Francisco federal judge?s 2010 ruling that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional doesn?t apply to Dronenburg, according to a petition filed with the California Supreme Court today.

?On the one hand, respondents have ordered him not to enforce state law and are threatening to punish him if he does not comply with that order,? Dronenburg?s lawyers said in a court filing. ?On the other hand, petitioner has an independent statutory obligation to enforce California law defining marriage as a union of a man and a woman.?

Dronenburg asked for an immediate injunction blocking the directive and letting him refuse to issue gay couples marriage licenses until the lawsuit is decided.

?The filing offers no new arguments that could deny same- sex couples their constitutionally protected civil rights,? Harris said in a statement. ?The federal injunction is still in effect, and it requires all 58 counties to perform same-sex marriages. No exceptions.?

[BNW] XCOM Unit: Beckoning for a Fully-Fleshed out Futuristic Military

Part of the Brave New World expansion was the XCOM unit, futuristic soldiers which specialize in paradropping, plundering, and destroying. It upgrades from the Paratrooper, but has almost two times the strength [65 str vs. 110 str]. However, that's not even the best part: it can paradrop forty hexes away, making it the fastest unit in the game. The XCOM opens up new strategies that makes end-game conquering much more interesting. This is where the XCOM comes in handy...

When you have run out of Uranium/Oil/Aluminum but need a powerful unit.

When you want to jump behind enemy lines and knock out their relatively vulnerable artillery units.

When you want to launch a surprise attack on the enemy's capital before they can react.

When you need a unit that can reach the action quickly.

When you want a unit that can heal itself easily (paradrop and pillage!).

When you want a unit that can destroy tile improvements very easily (paradrop, then pillage aluminum mines, oil wells, uranium mines, to weaken the enemy's units which require these resources).

I could list many more things, but I think I've made my point: the XCOM is very useful, and opens up many strategic possibilities. With that having been said, the XCOM could be the first of many new, unique futuristic units being added to the game. The information era could be the most interesting era to wage war in, with plenty of new strategies unique to that era alone. This would improve Civilization V's endgame, along with BNW's new features.

TL;DR: Giant Death Robots and XCOM units? Why stop there? :-)
